Thought a couple of those were guys pitching for the Yankees and Red Sox!
  3. Sierra Trading Post had 2 inexpensive rods 9ft.-10 wt. on sale. If you sign up for their deal flyer coupon they are even cheaper. One rod is a TFO Fly Rod Chronicles rod that is 4pc. but only with a rod sock for $84. The other is a Cortland Pro Cast with rod sack for $60. They are both priced higher if you don't have the deal flyer coupon.
  4. Sometimes i'ts more than the water that's deep around here. Can make some boring days very interesting!
  5. Water guage this morning at Montauk showed 233 cfs which would make it pretty full .We fished it last Wednesday at 140 cfs and it was real nice for sight fishing with the fly rod. I often call the hatchery office to get their "take" on the stream as to flow and clarity. They did have a lot of nice fish in the fly zone.

    What's Cooking?

I'm to the point where I check out the what's cooking segment before the fishing reports and stories!
  7. Only a few sections at Roaring River where you can wade so you wouldn't need any waders plus standing on the bank in June in waders could get mighty warm.
  8. Sent 4 dozen and buddy Kenny added another 2 1/2 dozen in the mail today to Phil.
  9. It's about an hour and change West of me but haven't been in a couple years.Last time,Jim Messina from Loggins and Messina had rented out the complex but not the stream.
  10. Mentioned it to a friend who is not on the forum but will donate a couple dozen.Going to buy a couple fly boxes when I get to the city and will send them asap.
  11. Started fishing Montauk and the upper Current a long time ago and have caught a lot of browns over 18" in both. First stumbled into the big bunches of browns coming into the park in high temp and lower water conditions in 1995. Having started fishing that park in the later 60's, don't know how how I missed finding these fish.I Was talked to Darrell one day when he used to work at Reed's Cabins and they still had their monthly tournament. They gave out a trophy to the biggest fish turned in each month along with pictures of all the entries. Some of the lads were taking limits of browns 18" up on a regular basis. Didn't find many browns in the park during those times even though the water conditions were similar.
  12. Wish you'd had a microphone on the "Chief" to hear his and "Duckys" comments.
  13. Took the same 2 1/2 mile hike today and found 67 more mushrooms. Hope the walk balances out the calories from eating them.
  14. I'm in too! Got some secret patterns from Laker 67 that are said to be real trout catchers. A really great cause.
  15. Haris122- don't know that they are any easier and I have fished the park for a lot of years.Used to be some big browns and carp in the lake but they were harder to catch than the regular fish. The C&R stream didn't have as many fish in it as it usually does for some reason. We fished it Friday and caught enough to make it interesting.normally more fish in the fly section -as it is in most of the parks that have designated zones. I seem to catch more fish in the campground area than I do in the fly water too! Don't know if the bait fishermen keep the fish feeding more or that it has better sight fishing water compared to some of the fly water. Started fishing Montauk in 1969 with a couple buddies.
  16. Wife, Susie and I found 70 today in a 2 1/2 mile walk. Older brother and his wife have found 170 or so and all have come within sight of there home in Desloge .Hope to get out a couple more times after the next rain.
  17. Many of the good folks on the Forum have heard me tell stories of my wife Susie's love of fishing. Some of you know her and have witnessed her on the stream and have seen her with the fly rod.Still some of you may know about her her concern's and the personal losses she has endured. Susie is a two time breast cancer survivor, lost her and mine wonderful son Brett in 2010 and 2 identical twin grandson's the next year. Throughout these extremely hard times she has pushed on often with a few tears but always with the resolve to keep going. This short story comes from a couple days on the water since the twins died in 2011. We were fishing Montauk one day and both were catching a good number of fish. After a picnic lunch in the campground ,I excused myself and went to the men's room while Susie headed back to the stream. As I approached her from the bank -3 teenage boys were walking downstream around her.You never know any more how people are going to react so I was watching and listening closely. One of the young men said "Gawd Lady Your Awesome". Not quite what you always expect from our youth but it was a comment I had to ask about. Susie had stepped into the stream and quickly caught a 2# rainbow. After a short fight she left it in her net in the water long enough to show me before she released it.It was at this time the 3 boys first saw and watched her fishing. They were excited that she had caught a fish since they weren't catching any and were impressed that she was going to release it. She no sooner netted the first the first fish when one of equal size swam into her view and she caught it on the next cast. Now these boys were really excited and spoke the words mentioned in the title. The rest of the story happened at Roaring River the next summer. We were both catching fish and I wandered up to the Twin Falls and found a spot to fish. After catching 3-4 in a row a man about my age asked me if I could help him. I pretty much will help anyone if I can and this guy had been struggling. He might have been 5' tall and had some birth defects which didn't make it easy to cast but figured it was game on. I had rigged him up with a split shot and gray scud and demonstrated a good drift and watched him miss strike after strike.About that time another guy asked me to help his son who was blind.Pretty much the same scenario occurred with me watching his drift and telling when he had a strike. I started upstream and Susie came walking by so I introduced her to the first guy and told him to keep an eye on her.She had set down on the walk way and started picking off fish one after another. He soon moved right next to her and with each fish he would yell"Unbelievable".She eventually got up as he had fly line draped off her head and vest. In two short moments these people saw her as awesome and unbelievable and never knew her whole story and how true their statements were.
  18. Might be the best story I've ever read on this forum!
  19. Nice, I have as much fun catching sunfish with a fly rod as any species of fish.Light rod and reel and they fight like a champ.
  20. I was fortunate to be at Roaring last October after a flood around the 10-11th of the month.Big fish had escaped from the mill pond and they were pretty abundant.I try to practice C&R on big fish when at all possible so the 3 days wife Susie and I fished ended up catching 11 lunkers. Had one die that I couldn't get going and didn't say much to some of the buddies on the Forum as I was a little embarrased that it happened .Fish was over 10# and 2 of the other fish were bigger that I released. How this ends up being a new fishing report concerns one of the bigger fish.On the opener, one of my fishing buddies was fishing in the twin falls and missed a huge fish .When it rolled he said "I think it was the big fish you turned loose". He is a taxidermist, fly tyer, rod builder, etc. The lad wears more hats and has more on his plate than most. The 2nd day of March ,his uncle Danny who has been a fishing buddy for 30 years had the same moment. He didn't get enough hook in this monster fish but saw it clearly and again said I think it was the big fish you released. This Thursday,my older brother "Toofer" is at Roaring with his son-in-law and the boy's Dad for the latter 2 first time at the Park.Older brother who fishes well but hasn't fly fished much until last year got into some big fish. His voicemail was priceless "Saw 5 lunkers and the first one took a swipe at the fly and missed-the 2nd one he didn't get enough hook in and it throwed the hook and the last one was a great big rainbow".He described the short but exciting battle as the fish made 3 long runs and had wallowed on the surface before it made one last attempt and broke his line.I asked how big and he said biggest he had ever hooked.Sent him a picture of the biggest one I had released from that area and he said "I think it was the same fish".That one fish if it is the same fish is sure getting a lot of mileage and has created some wonderful memories for some of my family and friends.Don't have a clue if it is the same fish .Know it was still swimming when I left Roaring in October and wasn't caught opening day.Tim said a young man did kill a huge rainbow in the winter C&R so that could be the fish or it could still be swimming.
  21. The lady who runs Gary Romines office said he would not vote for any bill that would hurt our outdoor opportunities.Said he doesn't get to fish much anymore but still gets to hunt a little. That response was to HB955.His e-mail in response to the first attack on the MDC was pretty much the same as his office told me on the phone.Linda Black returned my call and told me the same. She would oppose any law that limited our rights in the Missouri outdoors.Hope to eventually see how they voted if it gets to that .
  22. Atta boy Chief-always read your posts as they are interesting, often quite informative and your profile picture makes me smile! Course that profile of Ness is something also.
  23. My State Rep.called earlier today after I had left a message with our concerns on this bill. She had read it and said she really didn't understand some of the language in the bill but she would definitely oppose it if it made it to the floor for a vote.We need some of the folks represented by Rep.Ross to contact him with their opposition to this bill.
  24. Fished the opener at Roaring and had a good time.Struggled to make it to the cabin as one of our group had some technical problems at home Saturday and was late departing. That threw us behind the big traffic wreck around MP80.Course if we would have left as scheduled we might have been in the middle of it.The fishing was good with a small group all day long.We ended up catching 8 fish in the 18-22 inch range but nothing over 5#.I had a shot at a big rainbow while wading and 2 of the guys misfired on a bigger rainbow in the twin falls hole. Didn't seem to be any bigger crowd on the 2nd and fished the C&R that day by myself.Lots of fish in the riffles. The boys wanted to stay the 3rd night so we did then loaded up and went to BSSP for the 3rd day.Lots of fish caught in the outlets.
