  1. What a story! Little did I know when I woke up this morning I'd be learning about pigeons. Pigeons saving lives, krauts shooting down pigeons, pigeons that can't fly, and pigeons that can fly for a minute then stall out and tumble. It brings to mind this favorite (not) from childhood:
  2. Oh my! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_pigeon_breeds
  3. Well, I learned something today. I had heard of keeping pigeons, but know nothing about it or why folks do it. Pretty cool. Thanks for sharing.
  4. I’ve never done an opener, but I expected it to be much worse based on pictures I’ve seen.
  5. Absolutely terrible! @Flysmallie is grumbling about the Beatles. He ain't heard nothing yet! I won't link -- that'd be inhumane.
  6. I was stricken by two Stage 4 ear worms in the 70's that I still vividly remember. 'Midnight at the Oasis' and 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight'. I hope typing this doesn't trigger something because they were baaaad. C'mon Spooky!
  7. A while back I thought about starting an ear worm thread, but I figured that would only make things worse. I get them bad. When Christie McVie died a couple months back, I watched some of her stuff on YouTube. I had 'Everywhere' stuck in my head for weeks. Then it was 'Songbird'. I still relapse occasionally, but today it's being drowned out by the guitar solo in 'Spooky'. Hope this helps
  8. Thought this was interesting. U2 photo of balloon, and an amateur analysis of where it was in the photos. https://www.npr.org/2023/02/23/1159007203/selfie-china-balloon-photo

    What's Cooking?

I wouldn't have thought to make a muffuletta at home if it wasn't for this thread and @rps We've got a Mardi Gras party to go to this weekend and I'm going to find some good bread, make the olive salad and take some over. Last time I made it (which I probably shared here, but couldn't find it):
  10. Getting my hearing aids next Monday. It's overdue -- just ask anybody who knows me. I took them for a test drive at Costco last week. During that I told my wife I wish she wouldn't talk so loud. Pushing the shopping cart around I couldn't believe how loud it was when it went over a seam in the concrete. It's funny what you notice. When I took them out it was like I had put my fingers into my ears. Such a dramatic difference. I'm really ready to get them. But -- that soft talker at work is still gonna have to speak up. I'm not setting those on 11 just for that punk!

    What's Cooking?

I've gone back through this thread periodically. It's kinda fun. But at over 1,300 pages it's a lot to cover. Sometimes I'll do the 'Go to page' thing and jump into the middle somewhere. Lots of good stuff in here.

    What's Brewing?

I went to bottle my latest batch of cider yesterday and found one last bottle of this that started in 2017. I didn't know it was down there. I wasn't really sure what to expect because of its fairly low alcohol content (~6%) and light body. But, it is very good! Nice and crisp.

    What's Cooking?

I remember you doing lobster tails in butter. That’s on the list for sure when I can get over to Fareway in KCMO. Not too far from my office and the best meat and seafood in town.

    What's Cooking?

I never was too interested in sous vide. Not because I thought it couldn't help, it was more about not really wanting another kitchen gadget knocking around. That and thinking I get it pretty darn close without one. But, son got me one for Christmas, so I sorta got pushed into it. I gotta say I really love this thing. First thing we did was a strip steak at 130 for a couple hours with a couple minute sear in a screaming-hot cast iron skillet (no alarms sounded ). Perfect! Since then we've done a lot of stuff like...Cod: What I'm calling surf and sty (scallops and pork loin -- using up what we had) Shrimp, scallops I really like the outcome, and the process. It's nice to get something started and not worry about it while you're doing other things. Get everything else ready, come in for the sear. Nice. I'm sold!
  17. Good luck!

  19. We went to the newly redone Truman Library earlier this month. It's a great library/museum, and way better than it was before. Anyhoo, I thought this was really cool:
  20. Not sure if this was the same trip, but this was 2006.
  21. Brian's a good guy, though I haven't seen or fished with him in years. I remember we fished the NFOW one time and came to that gate near one of the islands - that gate that isn't connected to any fence. I said, 'Somebody better go back and get a sh**load of dimes.' He laughed, so he's good with me

    Overhyped

We've got a Shake shack here. Tried it and it wasn't bad, but there are probably 50 or more fast-food burger joints closer. I had In-N-Out many years ago in San Diego, and remember it was pretty good. Not sure what I'd think now as my palette is so much more sophisticated
  23. It used to be a pretty sweet arrangement. Our mail guy Eddie was always lugging packages to my office or taking stuff to the post office for me, since he went every day anyway. Just run whatever through the postage meter, give me the total and I'd write a check. He retired, we're in a new building and I don't even know who does our mail now. The last swap I hosted I had to lug that crap to the Post Office all by myself. Worse, I got stuck in line behind some folks getting passports.
  24. One of the search results had her referred to as 'The Tying Nun'. Folks over 60 should get that one.
  25. A little Googling turned her up as a teacher at a Catholic school in Hot Springs, AR https://sjshs.org/about-us/
