  2. Oh heck DJ, I will take you goose hunting and PAY you not to take me on an all nighter. Been there done that! Not as mad at them as I used to be. BilletHead
  3. I'm with Laker. I want fish to taste like they are supposed to. Each and ever species has a distinctive taste. We do occasionally use a spicy commercial batter to just S&P mixed in with flour but by far thick meaty fish get a brush of olive oil, sprinkle of S&P and maybe some rosemary. Then on a charcoal or gas grill and a quick cook. When meat goes from transparent to translucent to opaque pull it off. Man I think I need to thaw some walleye fillets pronto! BilletHead
  4. Actually I heard not by experience that they like high denomination bills waved in front of them. It gets the bite going. BilletHead
  5. Thanks to you all. BilletHead
  6. Well my friend Brad made it to hunt a couple of times. He generally makes it between Christmas and new years for a week but it did not happen so we did one here at the end of season. A quick weather change had changed things since Pat and I did our little smack down Sunday morning. Brad made it yesterday morning and we hunted last evening. it was 60 degrees when I got up yesterday morning and it was 31 with a strong north wind when we set up. No shots fired but worked a few birds. They had places to be and it wasn't with us. Watched the weather forecast and had a window this morning. A close place here to the house between a rock quarry and a body of water they were traveling back and forth to. A few were using the pond we sat up at. A freezing mist and thick fog as we set up. Scared some birds off. Nothing for a long time. Birds behind us in formation. Lots of birds in waves. Sow went on and some we tricked into the decoys. I bet well over a hundred in two of those flights. We dropped two. Walked to the side where they were blowing to on the water. Brad picked up one of his and I did mine. As I was standing there six passed over the decoys high heading over me. Triple B's in the gun I figured why not? Swung on lead bird and dropped him. Walked over and picked him up. Big bird looked at legs. Hollered at Brad it's banded. He says your Shi%&*ng me? Nope .Season ends Wednesday but this was my last hunt and a great way to finish up. Birds For Brad to take home and another band for my collection! I am truly blessed or a lucky turd. Came home, cleaned birds and reported band. It was banded near Bartlett, Ramsey County, North Dakota. So I can add another state to my bands! Brad with the birds, Then just the birds, Banded one was a greater and the other two lessers. All were very fat and healthy. One thing that surprised us. The banded bird was banded when it was too young to fly in 2018 so it did some growing on good groceries to get this large. Thanks to all for following the BilletHeads waterfowl posts we enjoy sharing, BilletHead
  7. Yes https://www.usgs.gov/centers/pwrc/science/bird-banding-laboratory?qt-science_center_objects=0#qt-science_center_objects https://www.fws.gov/birds/surveys-and-data/bird-banding/reporting-banded-birds.php I cannot remember but on one of these sites there is a map where you can see where some birds have been banded and recovered. I have shot birds banded here in Missouri, Manitoba along Hudson's bay, Minnesota, and Iowa. and then todays bird. BilletHead

  17. You know Kendall I am no scientist but here is one example on the internet. I know the lesser Canada geese we have shot that were banded are much larger. We shoot one a year of these little dudes. One year I shot two. http://www.ducks.org/hunting/waterfowl-id/cackling-goose BilletHead

  19. General goose season is just about done, Thank goodness for the thaw. Just thing a few days ago we woke up to 4 degrees here in BilletHeadVille. Just a few open water spots the geese were keeping open. Not seeing any at all but those cruddy snow geese we really done want to mess with. We still had frozen ponds yesterday morning but birds were moving. We mad a drive and hatched a plan. Big wind all night and 55 degrees this morning. We loaded up and headed out to our spot. Put out 18 floaters in the pond and 18 full bodies behind our layouts in the fescue field. Pat grassed the blinds well and we disappeared awaiting the morning flight. Birds began to fill the skies. Snows at first then canada and white fronts of course the specks wouldn't play but the Canada geese did . A little after nine our last bird hit the water lights out and belly up. A mix of greater, lesser and a bonus cackler not much bigger than a mallard, We had the little trailer packed, I am hoping to get out maybe one more time before it closes Wednesday. BilletHead
