Yep we still have blooms and tiny peppers on our plants. We picked over fifty assorted peppers yesterday preparing for the big first freeze. I will babysit the lettuce but the pepper plants can meet their demise this weekend! I will do a walk around the garden and thank each plant for what they gave us . Going to take the rosemary out of their pots too, put in the ground and see if I get lucky enough to overwinter them. BilletHead

Wrench you answered your own question. Yes the heat in the ground will make a big difference covering the plants. Not just a couple of degrees. If you look back a couple of years in this garden forum I put straw around one of these beds. Then covered with Plexiglas frames. When it got real cold I would put a light and cover with a tarp at night. We had fresh lettuce for new years dinner. The straw bales would freeze solid and I had to shovel snow off the covers. This and some plants are more cold resistant than others. The greens that are pictured in this thread have had two frosts on them without covers, one pretty hard. Initial cost making these covers and messing with the winter greens, worth the trouble? Yes. Beats the heck out of the crap you sometimes get in the market. Home grown buddy! BilletHead

Not as big and bright in the morning as it was in the Evening, Sure was not any ducks flying in the wee hours of this morning and as you can see the BilletHead's were bored. All we had was the Mrs. Cell phone. So we celebrated the setting moon and the rising sun. Just another quality day together. I am trying hard to balance the moon on my finger, And then the Mrs. just wanted to catch it. Then as the moon went down we watched the sun rise together. BilletHead

Old Plug yes if I was having a bad problem I would do the sprinklers. The deer usually don't mess withe the beds much. A little sharing of the greens is not hurting us right now. Growing faster than we can eat it. I know the one bed will be covered this weekend with freeze protecting covers. The taller plants in the one bed will be picked! BilletHead

Or should it be green faced? Been a pretty good fall lettuce crop. So yesterday the Mrs. was picking a mess and we noticed a thief had been there. I will share but would like to be asked first. . I knew who the culprit was. Put up a camera and caught the infiltrator green faced. No not the Mrs. This thief had cloven hooves and a black nose, The deer hunters headlights as they were going home opening day in the background as the thief feed in the front yard. Covered up the far bed this afternoon. Will be sleeping on the front porch tonight. Think I will wake up to the thief crunching greens in the closer uncovered bed? Guess I should go out and shoot a deer but having too much fun chasing ducks and geese :). BilletHead

I guarantee you would like his recipe. Before this one I would just cook my hearts in a big pot of brown beans. Not that I would not do it again but for awhile it would be Steve R's heart. Brown beans and heart though makes you fart and that is good for the heart BilletHead

Hard to beat the egg sammich, only way is goose fat in a vintage skillet ! There was a lot of history and meals melted away in the cleaning process. I will say the carbon build up will gather before I am ready to hand these down to BilletHead JR. BilletHead

OK I had to try one of the methods restoring one of my cast iron crusty skillets. http://www.castironcollector.com/restore.php# Used the Aerosol oven cleaner method. Needed two soaks but was very happy with the results. Then I re seasoned it . Did not have any crisco so I used goose fat. Upped the temp to 370 as goose fat has a higher smoking point. Here is how it turned out, Here is the same skillet before cleaning and re seasoning, So after bumming around this morning I came home hungry and couldn't wait to try the skillet. A good old egg sammich was what I wanted. A three egged one at that. A little goose fat was melted in the skillet and then the three eggs. As they were getting done I broke the yolks and swirled them in the whites and dusted with S&P. We had bought a round loaf of New York salt rye bread at hyvee the other day so I sliced off a couple of slices. One side of each I spread some goose fat on. Flipped the eggs and when done pitched the bread slices in the skillet to toast. When both sides were toasted on went the eggs and a squirt of yellow mustard. No disappointments I was happy, For you that think I am a bit touched for using the goose fat. Better for you than butter. Plus my goose fat is taken from the wild and for all intensive purposes is antibiotic free but may of feed on designer waste grains in places . After feasting a hot water bath and scrub clean. Back onto the stove top burner for a quick heat dry. I think after this all of my vintage iron will be getting this royal treatment soon. One at a time. Baby steps, BilletHead

Title says it all, The BilletHeads had a plan until our friend and forum member Curtise gave us a call and asked if we would like to join him opening morning in a small hole of water in the timber. Our answer was heck yea . So we met him at the location. It would be a walk in so he backpacked a load of decoys while the Mrs. and I pulled in a couple of light loaded sleds. Like hitting the easy button the sleds slid in over the wet leaves and sticks. The shooting was great but the shooters did some missing but around nine thirty we all limited out. Curt had a nice drake woodie, Mrs. BilletHead got one of the biggest fattest blue wings I have ever seen and I happily took out a nice bull pintail. The rest of our bags consisted of sporty green wings. Just like opening days in the past lots and lots of shooting in the distance. Great fun and sport with a good friend. When the BilletHead's got home and birds cleaned some went right to the grill. We worked up an appetite, So much fat in the skin dripping off the grill stayed covered up to keep the flames down! Duck fat rocks . Today just like in the past on morning two somewhat slower.. Hit the pond we like for opening weekend. Early landing of some woodies but even though it was after LST in the timber you could not see the birds . Finally they spooked up but with trees in the background no shot still too dark. Then the green wings began to fly and we took out a limit between the Mrs. and I. Much less shooting in the distant areas so it was slow for others also. We picked up early with our prizes and called it a day. BilletHead

Yep some of the stuff we have all used makes us a ticking time bomb. Had some bad crap in a spray can we used to clean underground power cables when we were terminating them in underground transformers and on dip poles. While on the ground there was no way to avoid the fumes. Now on a pole just swing to the upwind side if at all possible. They or someone decided it was a cancer causing agent and formula changed. New stuff didn't work too well. Then there was Polyclornated bypheneals . Can't remember how to spell that oil. PCB's for short. Been up to my elbows in that liquid rewiring pole hung transformers. Then they decided that was bad and we started testing everyone of those at any place that had anything to do with processing food. Then if any blew up spilling oil we had to dig up all dirt and soil that had an oil sheen, put it into a 55 gallon drum to be tested and shipped off to who knows where? Like it or not we are all lab rats from time to time . Speaking of doctors it is time for blood work and a physical. What will be heard through the stethoscope? What will the blood my Mrs. draws say when it gets tested? Tick, tick, tick as we get older. BilletHead

Too funny Johnsfolly, We had the two youngest grand kids this weekend while BilletHead JR and the daughter in law went to a Halloween party. We made smores using peanut butter cups for the chocolate part of the sweet sammich. Then we (they) carved pumpkins and I robbed the seeds and roasted them. Results of the carving with the Mrs. BilletHead's in the middle. Pretty good I thought for a 10 and 11 years young and an old lady . Then yesterday morning We got to laughing at this! Right off the bat I had to assist with the fake eye lashes. I kept telling her I was going to glue her eyes shut if she did not hold still. Hard to hold still while laughing. Then she said at work every time the doc she works with would tell her something or vice versa they would crack up and the doc would tell her it was hard to take her serious. One good thing is the kids were a bit happier with a scarecrow giving shots yesterday instead of a nurse. BilletHead

Did someone say cast iron? My cast iron is near and dear to my heart. We have nine assorted skillets. Three not pictured are more modern lodge skillets. The others are hand me downs from my grandmothers. Wish I could hear some of the stories behind some of these. Use them all the time and yes there could be more clean up but the crust on a few of these are pure love and one could only imagine what has been cooked in them. the deepest one has no markings at all. More info here on cast iron than on the ned rig . I have my eye on a single handled square griddle. See there is an old crusty man living in a trailer. A trailer that is on its last leg, he may be too? So when we drive by and it is raining there is always laundry hanging out. We are thinking this is how his clothes get cleaned. TRUTHFULLY this is a fact only when it rains we see this. Well lately there is this square griddle hanging on the clothes line. I need to have a chat with him and get the scoop. May be something to add to the collection? Could be junk also ? BilletHead
