If you imagine current, no matter how small, is sending a signal with your bait that's dipped in scent. I think the fish are curious enough to follow a scent trail and come over to investigate, then maybe see your lure and take it. Then the scent might might help them hold on long enough to get hooked. If you add fluorocarbon line, a better technique, right size bait, color, etc., you're putting all the odds in your favor and it might translate to more bites during the day.
