FishinCricket Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 One word. K5 Blazer. Why on earth did they stop making them. The did it all. Pulling boat, hunting ect. And did it for around 15-18 miles per gallon. Uh, that's three words.. lol but you are exactly right! cricket.c21.com
Wayne SW/MO Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 As for the Blazer, I think I can do it in two, pollution and rust. I Elk hunted with a buddy who drove an old K5 that had been around the world several times. I took a pickup camper on a F 250 and he pulled a trailer, about 22' I think, up into the mountains. The next morning it started to snow and didn't quit until it was 12's deep. When we left we had to take a one lane logging road down the side of a mountain. It was steep with few pulloffs for traffic and no guard rails. I went down first so that if he didn't go off the side but blocked the road I could come up and get him. It was a white knuckle trip in 4 low and I tried to get him to leave the trailer and we would come back later and get it, he wouldn't. In the end he made it down, but I think he had more guts than good sense. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
wily Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 I've got an 95 Toyota 4 Runner, and it does it all but doesn't get very good gas mileage...only 15 or so. it pulls my 17 foot aluminum bass boat pretty well. except for the steep hills on 65 going and coming from branson...we end up going pretty slow (50 or so) by the time we make it to the top. looks good, and it's utilitarian...the back window comes down, and the rear door folds down like a tailgate. i think it's the best feature of the truck. mine has 175k miles, and i'd drive it anywhere...on the road or off. my wife's car is a subaru outback -- i'd drive it anywhere but not pulling a boat.
Wheatenheimer Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 OK, so I have to chime in on this one. If you are so fortunate to find one of these incredibly sweet rides..........jump on it! I have an 1986 AMC (same folks that made the Jeep for many years before Chrysler) Eagle wagon. It has the Jeep 286ci (4.2 liter) in-line 6, independent front suspension, shift on the fly 4 wheel drive. I have 116K miles and it purrs as if it were new. I consistently get 20 mpg and have slept in the back comfortably when the weather was too rough for the tent. I would feel confident driving it to the Pacific Northwest for a Steelhead Odyssey and back with no hesitation! "It's sort of like a Jeep thing.........even I don't understand!"
jjtroutbum Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 Always liked the Eagle concept/execution but darn the styling was lacking over at AMC Jon Joy ___________ "A jerk at one end of the line is enough." unknown author The Second Amendment was written for hunting tyrants not ducks. ness Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 Always liked the Eagle concept/execution but darn the styling was lacking over at AMC What??? How can you say that about the folks that brought us the Pacer, Gremlin, and Hornet? I had a friend in college that had a Whore-nut. This guy's about 6-6 and was cramped even with the seat pushed all the way back (which reduced the capacity by one, as half the back seat was lost). His blinker stick just came off in his hand one day, so he replaced it with a Popsicle stick. Man, that was a sweet ride. Wheatenheimer -- that's my idea of a fishin' car you've got right there. Only thing that would make it better is vinyl wood side panels. John

bigredbirdfan Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 I have a 1980 cj5 and I would only use it to pull my kids around on a sled or my 16' aluminum boat 10 miles to spfd lake. It's just not a long distance hunting/fishing vechicle for two reasons 1) I can't take the soft top beating around very long on the highway (wranglers are marginally better for this) 2) Holds little to nothing. I guess you could stuff your boat full of your camping/fishing/hunting gear and solve #2.
grizwilson Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 I have a 91 Jeep wrangler, pulls anything that dont make the oversize tires rub, gets decent gas mileage. I had John's 4x4 in Billings Mo put a 4.3 v6 in it.... I sure miss the poor mileage, low power and oil drops in the drive way that slant 6 had....... get one put a 4.3 in it and you can do what you like, but not much storage. g “If a cluttered desk is a sign, of a cluttered mind, of what then, is an empty desk a sign?”- Albert Einstein
Wayne SW/MO Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 I sure miss the poor mileage, low power and oil drops in the drive way that slant 6 had.... Well if it was a slant six it weren't no Jeep. My straight sixes always had lots of power and didn't use any oil, they did use their share of gas, but then again you can't have a low rearend and expect high mileage.
