Spoken like a Chief who has lost a few feathers in battle! Let me clarify, Chief . . . does this form of respect apply to dealing with landowners who are convinced they are in the right even though they may not be?

You are a piece of work, Chief.

Chief found a friend for all of us in our Sheriff. He was asked, basically, not to make waves. Whether or not you would have done that really doesn't matter. It was he who was asked to do it.

You need to work on your people skills.

C'mon. I never made accusations of wrongdoing of anybody. Watch the video again, then read my original post. The cops and the landowner were after clearly looking for Chief and asked where he was and how you guys knew him. All I said was that I found that VERY curious because we never heard that story originally, did we? That put the whole thing in a different light, at least for me and raised some questions about previous incidents. Whatever those were, we never heard SQUAT about those incidents, did we? And so then as we were told by Chief - the sheriff told him stay away for a while to let things cool off, and he asked you guys to do the same. Why? If he was snow white innocent, its hard to imagine why there would be a warrant for his arrest, why the cops would know him by first name, and why he would agree with the sheriff to stay away. Why did he ask all of you to stay away as well? Missing info, thats all. No accusations on my part.

PLEASE, I encourage ALL of you to go float Shoal Creek this coming weekend, with CHIEF as your guide, get out on the gravel bars, fish and wade and make a big shore lunch right there at the same spot we saw in the video. See where it gets you. You are all so in the right and there is absolutely no evidence of wrongdoing, GO FOR IT. And please video it again. And this time don't let Chief float way off downstream of you when the cops show up. That was interesting too!

The original STORY, as you have called it, is something that Chief and I and one other forum member knew about prior to this float. Was this section picked just to aggravate Prater? NO!!! It was picked because it is one of the most productive stretches on the creek.

Trust me when I tell you that we will float it again this summer and I for one will also wade the same spot that KC and Cricket were run off of. If the cops show up they will be dealt with as all authorities should be, with respect. That goes both ways guys.

As far as the high water mark comments go, none of us came close to those. So that was never in question. Pick and choose the language you want from what the MDC and the Missouri Supreme Court says. The bottom line is that we were harassed by not only a landowner, who has obviously overdosed on Viagra for Chief, and the local deputy, who by the way was the same deputy we dealt with back in February and obviously gave both Chiefs name and my name to a landowner who not only called them out under the illusion of lies but had sole intent to harass. That too is obvious by the constant calls to his place of work and to the county commissioner who he( obviously ) has in his pocket and the bogus warrant for his arrest.

Time to give it up CWF. You don't have anything but supposition. And I think you may have an overdose of Viagra when it comes to Chief.

And still entirely IRRELEVANT! If I'm driving 55 mph in a 55 mph zone, does a cop have the right to pull me over because I've had a dozen speeding tickets in the past on the same stretch of road?

You just answered your own question there, buddy. The sherriff asked Chief and the boys to stay away for a while to "let things cool off." It was not a demand or enforcement of law, it was a request made in attempt to assuage a hot-headed, egomaniacal landowner. If Chief wanted to float the same stretch the next day, he had the right to. It's just a favor to the local law enforcement.

Yea this river is not easily accessible (as some streams) so their seems to be long stretches between take-outs so it would involve a couple of cars and people and crafts etc. to float that stretch often..So that would be another reason not to jump back on it.

Cricket, I love ya just not in the tender sort of way, more in a river fishing guru sort of way. I think you gentleman acted very well that day on the stream. I didn't hear anyone beeing smartasses. If I would have joined you fellas for that float that day, I would have most likely been locked up in a Newton County cell. You guys handled yourselves just right from what I saw and heard.

We've beat this old horse long enough and I'm sorry for picking the scab and ruffling feathers. This is the last I'll say on it and then I gotta get out of this office and go fish.

It is unfortunate that this Prater guy is clearly a knucklehead and is so misinformed on this issue. He is in for a rude awakening, hopefully sooner and not later, and hopefully it will be done peacefully and without more floaters getting harassed. We're all together on that. And the biggest hope is that he doesn't have deep enough pockets to try and press it further and take it up the ladder through the courts. If he does, we could all lose big, all over the state, on a lot of great fishing streams that run through private property (as most do). I love to float and fish all over the state and have done it for about 35 years now. If there is a creek in the Ozarks, and it is big enough for a canoe, I've been on it at least once if not more times, so yes, I do have have a pig in this poke.

Aside from that . . . That was the biggest joke of a petition I ever saw. 1) It was collected on an internet forum, 2) delivered to a Newton County Sheriff whose job it is to enforce the law and keep the peace -- not to make laws or interpret gray areas of law -- so it was delivered to the wrong authority, and finally, 3) it was delivered by a person whose primary motive for going to meet the Sheriff in the first place was to clear up the warrant for his own arrest!
