Who Caught The Big Bow?

Man that is kind of weird that you guys are all catching the same fish over and over again. I guess with catch and release thats going to happen but, that kind of takes the luster out of it for me. That is one stupid or hungry Rainbow.

At least you guys are not sitting up there snagging big Browns and acting like you are doing something......the guys that do that @ Taney are scum in my opinion. It's sad that there are basicly catch and release regs on the upper portion of the river and loosers still have a way to screw with the trophies.eyes-on-fire.png

I knew I should have saved this link when I was reading it.

It was a CnR study on trout by some college professor. It was conducted using artificial lures only. They stocked pond A with trout and fished for them. All the fish they caught were put in a nearby pond, pond B. After several stocking and catching cycles they noticed something strange. If you fished pond A without a recent stocking you couldn't catch any of the left over trout, of which there remained about half of what they stocked. But you could go to pond B and always catch trout. In fact they caught the same trout over and over again. Meanwhile if left unstocked, you could never catch a trout from pond A unless it was restocked.

They cofirmed that while some trout will readily and repeatedly take artificial lures, other trout will never take an artificial.

I thought it was a pretty cool study. Right now my 12 year old daughter and her class are participating in the trout in the classroom program. They are raising trout from eggs and watching their development. Then they are released into MDC approved streams in MO.

Thanks for that info Pete. Sounds as if some trout are born more wary than others. It is good that some are dumb so that we can catch them. That project that your daughter is involved in sounds interesting. She may end up knowing more about the fish we catch, than we do.

This catching and re-catching of big fish happens more so in the trout parks. Fish at the parks have an established home range, whereas at taney they have 22 miles to establish that home base. This time of year brings them upstream to congregate in the upper lake. If you have taken noticed from the pictures, there are at least 4 "different" rainbows that have been caught. My guess is that new fish are moving in and the big females are yet to come. As far as lacking any luster in catching any of these huge males, not a chance for me. I love every minute of it. I can't say that I would ever tire of catching big fish. And the stupid part, the bigger they are,the dumber I want them. These big male rainbows are a rare treat, and not an annual occurence as with the browns. It is good to see t-como producing some giant rainbows once again. These big fish live sheltered lives out in the lake, so once they move into shallow water they are more inclined to be lured by a good presentation, whether it be one of your rapalas or one of our flies. I intend to take full advantage of this opportunity while it lasts.

Bob. I caught that same fish in january after you caught it. i will try to post pics. i dont know who you are but im willing to bet you are pretty good size like me because i know that was a huge fish and that pic doesnt quite do justice. i measured it at 29 inches(wishful thinking) but had a 21.5 inch girth. it was huge and bright read-had a

heron mark right where you are holding it and a scar in its face. jeremy hunt also caught this fish a couple years prior.look at his night fishing link

Brandon with his rainbow

What was the length/girth of this fish. Awesome fishing by you and your brother this season!

The only good line is a tight line

bman we didnt measure it when brandon caught it but we are guessing it is the same one i caught. to be honest we didnt get real good measurements on him but on the bogas in the net it weighed 16 lbs. i weighed my net by itself and it weighs exactly 1 lb so about 15 lbs-the length was around 28 inches so girth prob somewhere around 20 to 21.
