Jack Jones Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 I have been thinking about pursuing hunting to a minor extent. I would like to start out with one of the higher end air/spring/pellet rifles and simply go for squirrel or rabbit. Does anyone have any experience with this in the Ozarks? If so, where have you hunted and how did it go? There may come a time when I would want to work up to more involved hunting. However, not quite yet (due to time, money, and the wife's objection to having firearms in the house). Just looking for some input and opinions. Justin Spencer Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 My father in law shoots squirrels off his bird feeder with an air rifle and it does a great job, some states even allow deer hunting with some of the bigger caliber air rifles they now make. Should be able to do it about anywhere for squirrels, heck put up a bird feeder! Dutch Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 I have done it some with a Sheridan. We even killed one groundhog with them. I haven't done that in years except to discourage rabbits in my broccoli.
TroutRinger Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 It would be cheaper and more effective to buy a .22 than an air rifle. I got a Marlin 795 last Black Friday for $100. Then spend $50 on a .22 scope and rings. It shoots penny size 7-8 shot groups at 50 yards. You won't get that out of an air rifle without spending over $150...and it is semi-automatic. edit: Just an FYI. In many of the conservation areas around Springfield you can't use single projectile rifles (have to use shotguns) for squirrels. Have to drive about 30 minutes to the nearest public land where you can use a .22 or air rifle. "Of all the liars among mankind, the fisherman is the most trustworthy." Gavin Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 This will work for squirrels...It's not as much fun as shooting them with a pellet rifle though. http://www.m4040.com/Survival/Skills/Hunting%20and%20Snaring/Snares/Squirrel%20Snare.htm

BredMan Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 Spend a few extra bucks on a decent air rifle (Benjamin-Gamo) that shoots 1000fps or better. They are proven tree rat eliminators! Don't go for the 'Wally World' $100 models. They are priced cheap because they are built cheap and junk!
