I think you're more likely to be attacked by your own heart than to be attacked by a mountain lion. I may even be able to find some statistics to back up that claim.

You are right about that! I wasn't talking about the odds it would happen, I was stating the possibility it could happen.

I saw the River Hills Traveler article on the cougar capture last night at the Sports show. The cat weighed 122 lbs and some reports say 145 lbs. Either way a cat that big would be able to kill a full grown man quickly. I talked with a guy who went to those big cat sanctuarys in the past and he noticed the cats would react differently to a small child in the crowd. I think an opportunistic cat would definately kill a small child/toddler if they though it was easy prey, heck I bet even a coyote would do that, just ask Lindy Chamberlain in Austrailia what a wild dog can do.

Cats are certainly capable of killing quickly, but apparently they don't generally accomplish it. Most people who are attacked survive. It's not always about who's stronger, it's about how expensive it will be to follow through with a kill. If there are other people around or the cat is taking damage they generally give up. The advice that's generally given is to fight hard. You will almost always win.

We had a series of coyote attacks on preteen children in the outlying areas of Denver this year. All of the kids survived with a bite wound at most. Everyone pretty much agreed that it was shocking that the coyotes even tried. Somehow the animals in that area decided to take a shot. All of the attacks were on greenways inside the city. The coyotes ran up to the kids and grabbed them by the arms. After some screaming and kicking they ran off. Sucks that the kids all had to get rabies shots.

I suspect there will be substantially fewer coyotes in the Denver area in the future.

I've actually heard of people feeding the coyotes, which obviously makes the problem worse.

Man, and I was afraid to go into the forest because I was afraid of Bigfoot..... Seems like I maybe a loony.....

I did an article a few years ago about the increase of coyote attacks on pets and people across the nation. You hear about it fairly regularly in the news these days. They even captured one in downtown Chicago.

I think you all should be very afraid of mountain lions and coyotes and foxes with rabies. Load your weapons and lock your doors. More fish for me.

LOL, I will be in a boat, they'll have to swim to get me!

we need to stop this thread, I'm still having nightmares about the cougar attack I survived last August at Shelvin Rock all three were fatter than me and wore bikinis and obviously under the influence of the Demon Rum. I'm still terrifed at the idea of being on a river at twilight..........
