Boat Registration In Mo

I recently registered a used 10' jon boat. Per the Missouri DOR website, I should have recieved a "Pocket Card".

Pocket Card:

• is the certificate of number issued to a vessel.
  
• must be available for inspection at all time while the vessel is in operation.
  
• is printed at the same time as the certificate of title.
  
• is printed when the vessel registration is renewed.
  

When I asked the clerk at the counter (who was extremely helpfull by the way) about the pocket card, they told me that MO is no longer using this.

My question is, Does anyone here have any experience with this? This is my first time owning a boat of any kind, and I really don't anticipate any problems, as I will be on small private ponds and possibly a couple slow streams, but I don't want any just the same.

I registered it because I would like the option to use a trolling motor if I decide to on public waters. 3 years for approx $30 is a cheap option as far as I'm concerned.

I have rarely been checked and only then by state water patrol. I have not seen a card. Usually if you have your up to date stickers on you are good to go. State parks are good places to get checked for trailer licences, seems they have little else to do but take a close look at your trailer licence.

I think that gal might be wrong???? not sure but, last year I was checked by waterpatrol and he scolded me for not having my card....which after he left my vessel I found it in my tackle box ofcourse. That dude was giving me hell for not having in the boat while it was beeing opreated is what he was saying????

You'll get your registration card shortly via snail mail. Throw it in your waterproof boat toolbox (you have one of those right? )

How about having all the registered identification letters and numbers on the front of the boat? I can't keep them on there for nothing. They get wet and fall off. The adhesive doesn't stick to the side of boat worth a darn. I have never been hassled and have a current sticker with the year on the boat.

I have licensed 2 small boats in the last year...all I got was paperwork to carry with the boat.....yes a water proof container of some kind is necessary because you have to have paperwork with your boat.

According to the paperwork you have to have a sticker on one side and numbers (visible size) on both sides of your boat; Only if you "motorize"

By the way I had a friend fined $250 for not having his boat lic when he added a trolling motor.

I understand good old MO used to require even trolling motors to be lic...thankfully they dropped that

I learned the hard way about the lic and that in MO you have to have a valid title to start the process so if the seller says I will give you a Bill of Sale and thats all you need to get a lic. don't buy it unless it comes from a non-title state like Kansas...I learned the hard way...just an FYI

I got that lesson the hard way too. Now I get to paddle my duck boat anywhere I want to go instead of motoring.

Do the kayaks with built in trolling motors need to be registered, like the Ocean Kayak Torque series and the Hobie eVolves?

Jim, any motorized boat, be it electric or gas is required to be licensed/registered in the state of MO. If it is paddled it does not need to be, but there are some restrictions on the website listed above.

**** UPDATE **** Wrench, you were absolutely correct. I recieved the card in the mail along with my title (seperate envelopes). Now I will feel much more comfortable when I am out. I only wish that it was made of the waterproof material that some maps, and fishing licenses are made of, It would possibly last longer.
