Members Col Ron Posted May 28, 2012 Members Posted May 28, 2012 I was out yesterday on the White River with a client. The fishing was great until the wind really started to howl at over 20 mph, which was approximately 1pm. We all know, "Water conditions are subject to change". As we were throwing Anna Ks down stream, about 300 or 400 yards from the dam, someone yelled out, get out, they are running water. Due to the wind, it was impossible to here the generators turn on. NO HORN!!! We managed to walk out supporting each other, my client was shorter than I, the water went over her waders. We all know the predictions of water generation are not reliable, I can live with that. What we cannot live with, literally, is the operating engineers not sounding the horn. Unexcusable. When we finally reached the parking lot, I used the call box by the fenced in area at the gate my disbelief/ anger. The operating engineer said the horn "should have gone off", it didn't. He then said they turned one generator on, it shouldn't have given us much of a problem. I told him how ignorant his statement was and if they continue not to sound the horn, people are going to get killed. Bottom line, be very careful out there, if you are close to the dam, don't assume the horn will be sounded.
gotmuddy Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 got to love government employees. everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.
Ham Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 Having spent more time on the White, I'm surprized more people don't find themselves in trouble. I almost got washed away up at the dam. I heard the horn an immediately started for the shoreline and still ALMOST didn't make it. I'm flat out paranoid on the Norfork. I'm really surprized at how little instruction is given to the folks that rent boats for use on the White. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
eric1978 Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 got to love government employees. My wife is a government employee, and I can assure you she's no dummy. I bet you're the type who says "guns don't kill people, people kill people." And the same is true here...working for the government doesn't make people stupid, people are just stupid.

And the same is true here...working for the government doesn't make people stupid, people are just stupid. your wife is a rarity in the world of the bureaucrat. Very few government employees I come into contact with have ANY common sense. BTW, guns do a great job killing people, but trying to control guns isn't the answer. Col Ron, maybe you should spearhead a campaign to have a better system. everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted May 28, 2012 Root Admin Posted May 28, 2012 At Taneycomo, the Corp installed a second horn about 1/2 mile down from the dam. It helps. It wouldn't cost the Corp much to string a wire, install a pole and mount a horn or horns downstream of the dam at Bull. BTW- they installed the second horn AFTER someone drown. PPL said he or others around him couldn't hear the horn due to wind.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted May 28, 2012 Root Admin Posted May 28, 2012 I know there's a huge lodge/guide/fly shop contingent down there on the White... a lot more than here on Taneycomo. Not sure if someone could mount a campaign through FFF or TU to bring this to the Corp attention (like they don't know). The Corp office there seems to be a lot less affected by public opinion than here on Table Rock.
eric1978 Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 Very few government employees I come into contact with have ANY common sense. I agree, just like very few employees of private businesses have any sense...because they're people, and very few people, generally speaking, have any sense. It has nothing to do with government; it has to do with people. I'd venture to guess you work with at least a couple morons, no? The guy who was responsible for but failed to sound the horn is an idiot, and he's been an idiot his whole life. Betcha twenty bucks this wasn't his first job. So ten years ago when he worked at McDonald's, did you blame the restaurant when he gave you a Big Mcnure when you asked for Mcnure Nuggets? Of course not, it's just the idiot taking the order.

There are two where I work. everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.
ness Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 That's just scary. That's why I always wear water wings on the tailwaters. John
