MaxDrown Posted August 7, 2012 Author Posted August 7, 2012 The trip was a HUGE success! We had an absolutely fabulous time. The boys made good memories that they will never forget. What a blessing we have to have this magnificent river so close to home. We boiled water each night and each person had a personal water filter. Next time I will buy a couple of water pumps. On Monday, they completed a 10 hour conservation service project (picking up trash, clearing brush, and adding or replacing trail marker signs along the Ozark Trail River Trail starting at the Greer trail head. And then they completed a 40-mile float from Greer to Dalton, AR from Tue-Sat. The scouts and leaders successfully earned the BSA 50-Miler award. A big shout out and thanks to Brian Sloss and Eleven Point Canoe River. It wouldn't have been possible without them. Thank you to you all for all of the information on water purification. ColdWaterFshr Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 MaxDrown - great photos. You gave those boys a trip to remember and my hats off to you and your fellow scout leaders. 50-miler is no slouch feat. I always wanted to do that when I was in the BSA. Our troop was very active with camping, backpacking, and serious outings like this. We even owned our own dozen or so canoes until they got stolen from our churches garage and then considered replacing them but the liability for even having them was discouraged by the BSA. Troop 8, University Heights Baptist Church, Springfield, MO. Hugh Wiley, Ed McElvey (a real indian) and Jimmy Williams were our scoutmasters and they are all heroes of my youth. Its refreshing to see a troop doing something challenging and getting out there. Awesome. Best thing I have read on here in a while. What an experience - wow, floated it to Dalton with all those kids in the heat of summer and making it HAPPEN. I'm sure it wasn't easy on many fronts. preparation ,etc. Good for you!!!
Wayne SW/MO Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 I spent many years as a scout, but no 50 milers. It was all fun though. My hats off to you Max for putting in the time. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
MaxDrown Posted August 8, 2012 Author Posted August 8, 2012 Now the question ... what to do next year? -- Max Drown
ColdWaterFshr Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 Philmont. Zion Natl Park. Yosemite. Yellowstone. Or -- Boundary Waters is a big boy scout area and adventure. Go for it and start planning now.
Gavin Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 Looks like a fantastic trip.....Philmont ought to be on the list....Joined a troup for a year or two just to do that trip...It was awesome!
mic Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 Philmont. Zion Natl Park. Yosemite. Yellowstone. Or -- Boundary Waters is a big boy scout area and adventure. Go for it and start planning now. Boundary Waters...I went as a kid and will never forget it.
2sheds Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 ... what to do next year? IMHO, you have pretty much hit Nirvana here in the Ozarks. Consider: 100 mile canoe trek on the Current or Current+JacksFork+Current (Baptist to Big Spring, including a re-shuttle layover at Two Rivers for day trip kayak from Alley/ButtonRock back to TwoRivers). Can include some simple spelunking. 50+ miler backpack plus canoe trek on Eleven Point thru the Irish Wilderness Trail.
