Jack Jones Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 I've been fishing mostly with finesse worms up to now. I'm wondering if my luck on rivers would be better with a craw bait. Any recommendations on brands, rigging (hook sizes, jigs, etc...)? What tends to work around here and how do you throw it? fishinwrench Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 For creeks I think it's hard to beat a 1/8 Strike King Bitsy bug jig with a Zoom Lil'critter craw trailer. Pitch it close to cover (or in the cover) and let if fall on a semi-tight line. Most times if a fish is there it won't hit the bottom, but if it does give it a slow drag, then a hop. No bite? Crank it in.
Gavin Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Tube jigs...Zoom Fat Alberts...or Chompers Hula Grubs....are always in my kit....but I dont think it matters much..Any number of plastics can fill the bill.. I like the tube when the want something that spirals on the fall and once it hits bottom...there is no better craw bait for a slow drag or hop & drag retrieve...Single tail grubs are great if the boat is moving and you are prospecting..swim it steady, hop it, drag it. Mix it up...No wrong way to fish it. Hula Grubs...slower fall than the single tail...and great on a let it sit...hop, drag, type of retrieve. Usually 1/8, or 1/4 oz...Watch your line.
DaddyO Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Zoom Ultravibe SpeedCraw. It's the only one I use. In green or brown. DaddyO We all make decisions; but, in the end, our decisions make us.

Texas rigged is my prefered way with a 1/4 oz tungsten weight, and a superline 3/0 gamagtsu hook. Okechobee Craw is my favorite color. Its a killer for smallmouth. I usually throw it at root wads, and log jams. Fishing is slow on the bottom. In fast water you can also drift it down deeper and catch them that way.
Jack Jones Posted August 31, 2012 Author Posted August 31, 2012 As a follow up, tried Wrench's recommended bait because it was the easiest to get on the way home from work. I fished it a few weeks ago and did well with it. I sense a new addition to my go to lures. Football Head Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Reaction Innovations sweet beaver is a great bait. Rig it however you want really cant go wrong. I prefer to texas rig it or use it as a trailer.
Seth Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Chigger craws, paca craws, Zoom critter craws and Zoom Speed Craws are what I carry for craw baits. They are all green pumpkin or watermelon colored.
