Al Agnew Posted November 20, 2012 Posted November 20, 2012 That particular spring branch is well known for having them stacked up in the winter, and this year it's so clear you can actually see them. Hundreds? Perhaps. There's room enough for a pretty good bunch of them. The last time I fished it in the winter, I caught about 25 from the mouth of the spring and hte pool just below, and another 5, including the two biggest, from another spot about 50 yards downstream and across, right where the current from switched from the spring side to that side. So I caught about 30. What percentage of the total of fish there do you think I caught? Another time, when the river was high and very murky and the spring branch was also flowing strong and murky, a buddy and I caught about 45-50, all in the 100 yard stretch from the mouth of the spring branch down. How much of the total population did we catch? I doubt that we're good enough to catch the majority of what's there. So yeah, I'd guess "hundreds", as in 200 or more, wouldn't be a stretch.
Chief Grey Bear Posted November 20, 2012 Posted November 20, 2012 And the giggers don't know about this??? Greasy B Posted November 20, 2012 Posted November 20, 2012 Yes they do, and I'm sure they will stick as many as they can. I don't guess it's as bad as it use to be, I think we have a MDC agent who actualy patrols now. His father touches the Claw in spite of Kevin's warnings and breaks two legs just as a thunderstorm tears the house apart. Kevin runs away with the Claw. He becomes captain of the Greasy Bastard, a small ship carrying rubber goods between England and Burma. Michael Palin, Terry Jones, 1974

Jerry Rapp Posted November 20, 2012 Posted November 20, 2012 I went today to a 100 acre private lake just east of Arcadia Valley. It is located on a trib of the St. Francois. No smallmouths have ever been caught there in it in the warm months that I know of, but today we caught 10 smallies up to 16 inches. My avatar photo is one I caught last winter there. These fish have to come down out of the creek. It happens every year, just like Clearwater and Wappapello.
Al Agnew Posted November 21, 2012 Posted November 21, 2012 Chief, two other things keep that spot from being gigged very much...access by jetboat is difficult unless the river is higher than it normally is in the winter, and the area does get patrolled because it's a trout area.

Funny thing, I have family in that area and they fish Lake Killarney quite often. Their reports vary a little from yours.
