I'm trying to upgrade a few topwaters in my arsenal and was wondering if anyone out there has a favorite prop bait for smallies. I've caught tons of fish on tiny torpedo's but they seem to attract mostly smaller fish. I'm looking at the Lucky Craft Kelly J Jr. but have heard mixed reviews on the action and quality. Let's hear your suggestions!

The "tiny" torpedo wil catch lots of small bass.

You need to upsize that bait to a standard size torpedo.

I wear them out on that bait in the frog color during the summer months.

I've got some Brians Prop B's thats are $27 a piece and the torpedo will out fish it.

The Kelly J is OK, you can have mine if you want it. The devils horse has always been good for me approaching the spawn

I agree with Trophy. Just get a bigger torpedo in the frog color. I don't think you need various colors in your "prop" selection. However, my prop bait of choice is a Luhr Jensen "Wood Chopper." I use this lure quite often. A few years ago on the Courtois, I had an absolute blast fishing it. I never put it down. Caught some nice (over 15") fish with it. One of those days.

Devils Horse is a good one too in gold or firetiger.

Torpedos of differents sizes in frog, black, and firetiger. Black of a night or near dusk is deadly.

Seems I hardly ever use prop baits anymore. The Crippled Killer has always been good, and I made my own, about the same size, similar shape, but a prop only in the back instead of front and back. Other than that, I like the Devils Horse, and another Smithwick lure that as far as I know is no longer made, the Buck n Bawl. It's like a much shorter, fatter Devils Horse with a prop only in the back.

One that is over looked the Ozark Mt. Wood chopper. Originally designed and made in my home town of Carthage by two brothers, they were quickly bought out. I still have some that they gave me from back in the 80's. Wish I would have never taken them out of the box now.

They are still made today I think by Luhr Jensen I think. Came in two sizes. Both are really good. I think you can find some on Ebay.
