Uncle.

I can't dance like I used to.

I have a question, and I'll just go ahead and directly blurt it out in hopes of a "Yes, No, or I don't know" answer.

We're walleye ever injected with HGH (Human Growth Hormone) and later released into the waters of the state?

I don't know. I know I haven't, and can't imagine why anyone would.

From AJ Pratt, MDC fishery biologist

Fish which are flowing or are within 2-3 days of spawning are not injected with anything. However, fish which are not as far along in development are injected with a FDA approved, hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) which induces ovulation. The product has been in used for over 20 years and greatly improved our walleye production. Below are two links describing induced reproduction and the inducing product we use.

Also, I might add the walleye are re-shocked instead of using other drugs to anesthetize the fish.

I'm not too worried, I don't see any big liability lawsuits from walleye in the near future. :D

Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

Thank you Mr. Lilley!

And my apologies to all for my incorrect assumption of today's hormone of choice. It's been almost 20 years since I had any interest in the matter. Sure wish I had the www back then. :-)

thanks bfisn and Lilley for the info. It is still one of those things that makes me say "what"? What effect will this stuff have a 100 years down the road on a native fish? Carp stuff in a walleye? HGH? (McGuire got banned from the Hall of Fame for it).

To effect the next generation or the next 100 generations it would have to alter the genetic sequence. Considerer also that the eggs are fully developed when the hormone is injected in the adult and likely have little or no exposure to it anyway.

Another hmmmm... Since the eggs and milt are stirred with a turkey feather, are they likely to turn into turkeyes?

If McGuire had confused HCG with HGH... well... let's just say sprouting milky breasts would have been a bigger embarrasment... :-)
