Well I just bought one of those scud dubbing multi-pack containers. I have the following to choose from:

  • Rainbow
  • Tan
  • Light Gray
  • Dark Gray
  • Light Sow Bug (mix between tan and gray)
  • Dark Sow Bug (charcol)
  • Light Olive
  • Olive
  • Shrimp pink
  • Bright pink
  • Amber
  • Orange

What is your favorite scud color?

Shrimp, then sow bug, which I think might be more prevalent then scuds

Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

I usually carry 3 shades of grey and 3 shades of tan. Light, medium, and dark. Then I usually have 4 sizes of each color. 12, 14, 16, and 18's. Then i usually have one dozen of each color and size. One whole box dedicated to sow bugs. Midges are the same way. That's why I like to find a few that work good and stick to them.

DD is ODC. Not that that's a bad thing. I'm really starting to reach for the scud when there's a lot of chop on the water. I have had my best luck with various brown or tan, but I also carry gray and olive. Once I get everything lined out. I'll try to have some olive some grey and some brown. I'd like to carry 3 sizes (14, 16, 18) of each color and 6 x each size. so total of 54 scuds.

Do you guys tie them on scud hook or wet fly? Read some people like the wet flies, because when scuds are swiming there are not curled. I only used scud hooks, but I wouldn't think it would make much difference.

Well for me, it would be similar to DD's choice. Doesn't matter what color as long as it is grey or tan.

Color doesnt matter that much but you want an assortment and a good hook.Grey's and Tans mostly...some with orange thread, some with color to match the dubbing..If your tying on a curved shank use a TMC 2499 for 16 and smaller. 16 and smaller down eye scud hooks dont seem to keep fish hooked very well, YMMV.

DD is ODC.

OCD is the correct acronym. :)

Sometimes I'm so OCD that I'm CDO. (very few will get this the first time)

I usually don't fish scuds, however, when I have fished them with success, it was on Taney at night under a lighted indicator and they were UV Scuds.
