I've seen that scenario play out as well, its good to hear your 9 year old boy understood. Gives me some hope that the new generation of kids will grow up conservation minded and not just take whatever they want when they want it.

yeah, that is great Chief, hope by the time my boy is 9, he will feel the same way!!

Thanks guy's.

You know, without me even knowing it, by dad taught me catch and release. When we floated the rivers as a kid, that is just what we did. I never questioned it. Never thought to. That is the way dad did it growing up and he just naturally passed it on. Now I know he didn't do it 100% but I would say from stories and pictures very, very, few bass were ever kept in his early days. I know in my time with him, he never strung up any bass. Still hasn't.

And so I just naturally passed it on to my son. And like me, he never questioned why we aren't keeping fish. We used to keep some nice bluegill, goggle eye, or trout, but never bass. And now he is getting into doing some river catting, and we rarely even keep them. He is 14 now and likes to have friends come along sometimes on trips. It is great to hear him explain why we don't keep fish.

So start them young on the conservation techniques and if questioned, just explain how much more fun it is to catch them again! Plus it ain't near the mess! Ha!

Maybe. One of them had to be on the stringer while he was catching the other one.

Crowbar, Crowbar, Crowbar. I won't bore you with all the details, but we grew up running in the same circles, skinning the same roadkill, wrastling the same sasquatches, treed the same 2nd cousins, all in a manner of speaking of course. Don't get me wrong, I never fancied the ugly ones, but Crowbar? Well, Crowbar would give Ernest T a run for his money.

Crowbar is the dirty underbelly of what TV fishing represents and how amateurs ruined the industry . . . him, and to a greater extent, Bill Dance, who of course became commercially much more popular than Crowbar could ever caveman scrawl into his diary HOPE to be, and in large part due to the increasing demand of the fishing show-viewing public for sex appeal. Lets face it . . . it isn't all glamour, drugs, and beauty like in the days of "Paul Dallas' Beyond Bass" w/ featured celebrity guests 1974-1984 airing at 11 a.m. every sunday immediately following Jim Bakers PTL Club. Those were the days.

Anyone want to know how Crowbar got his name?

Wow, I have to say some of the comments on here made about Crowbar are pretty harsh. Wasn't my intention for stir something like this up, it's not my style, you can look up any of my threads, the discussion about catch and release, and stuff like Chief's son were fine, but some of the harsh comments and namecalling are garbage like you see on Topix. I just felt like saying something about this after getting back on this thread and reading some of the stuff. There's a good chance, Crowbar or Wanda, and some of there friends or family are reading some of this, so felt like I should apologize for starting it up. I can't imagine Phil would appove of this either, and if it continues wouldn't bother me a bit if he locked this thread up.

I also regret posting the second pic, just fueled up more distasteful comments. Opinons are fine but, degrading namecalling is another. In my book, I wouldn't say anything behind a keyboard in an office, that I wouldn't say to someone face, it's just a good rule. Looks like to me Crowbar is one heck of fisherman, and maybe some can't handle a good ole boy from the hills having a little success. From what I hear and see going to Hardy a lot, he and Wanda do quite a bit for the community these days, I believe he even helped a family find there missing child that was lost to the spring river a couple years ago, when the authorites couldn't find him, that's an honorable thing in my book. Don't always judge a book by it's cover, or by it's past, and for sure if you don't even know the guy. Said my peace, ya'll have a good one!

There's no such thing, as a bad day fishing!

I agree with you Littleredfisherman, It really makes a person realize how low people are to make slandering comments like most on the topic like to do. It's jealousy and a lack of respect on their part. I would guess that most grow up in town and have an arrogance about them that they can't help. I haven't commented on this topic just because I know how radical they are about catch and release and it does no good to voice an opinion against them. In my opinion if a person goes out day after day and catches stringers of fish like those, then that's wrong, but to catch a few here and there I can't imagine what is so wrong about that. Smallmouth are good eating, along with many other types of fish. Just because someone uses live bait or likes to eat fish doesn't mean they're on food stamps or that they're related to Big foot.
