mixermarkb Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 Hey guys- I know this has been covered some before, but I'm starting to get bit by the bug, and I'm wondering about the Lews reels. I have close to 20 Shimanos, mainly older pearl white Chronach CH-100A's mainly, with a few greenie Curado 100B's, and a couple of Citica DPV reels for cranking. I've been thinking about bearing upgrades for a while now, as these reels are getting long in the tooth. They have pretty much been bulletproof though, and I'm still pretty much happy with their performance. My question is, if I buy a couple of the new BB-1 cranking reels, is that going to make me want to ditch all the old stuff and go Lews? How about the BB-1 vs the tournament pro cranking reel? Weight aside, what performance differences are there after you get above the tournament pro in the Lews line? How well have they held up? Any complaints? Anyone wish they had their old Shimanos back? If I start the upgrade path I'll most likely sell the Shimanos, otherwise I will probably start upgrading/replacing bearings in them this summer. Any thoughts are welcome, Mark Burris
Iclass Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 If you decide to sell the chronarchs please let me know! Newer ones aren't the same. I have 5 that are almost 20 years old, have them cleaned professionally every year. Lots cheaper than buying new anything and they work flawlessly.
jmes Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 I also went had this decision to make a few years ago. I started with the Tournament Pro and after a few years I now have everything in LEWS the BB-1 Is my favorite cranking reel and My Tournament Pro I use for everything else. The difference is the braking system. Good luck

Lvn2Fish Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 Lews reels will not disappoint. I have switched over and not had an issue with them at all. The breaking system on the bb1 is great for distance casting when throwing a crank.
aarchdale@coresleep.com Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 I threw curados for a long time, then I bought the cheap Lews reel and it was just as good in my opinion. Since then I have upgraded to lews tournament pros and have not been disappointed what so ever. I think for the price Lews is hard to beat for a quality reel. Don't get me wrong. The shimono's are prob just as good but a little more pricey
ozarksfishin Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Ive replaced all of my baitcasters and most of my spinning reels with Lews and have been using them for almost 2 years. You won't be disappointed with them. Very easy to use and maintain. Check out Sportsman's Outlet in Springfield, they usually have some on sale plus the store is ran by Jim Lovan, super great guy and local fisherman. I am on the water well over 200 days a year and I have yet to have any problems with any of Lews reels. OAF Contributor Phillip Stone http://ozarksfishin.com
gramps50 Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 I have a Lews Torment Pro and a Torment which came on a combo. They are both nice reels I don't have anything to compare them to as I haven't had a BC reel in years and last year decided to get back into it. I have never tried their spinning reels, became a Pluegar fan so most of mine are Pluegars. Are the Lews spinning reels as good as their bait casters?
dtrs5kprs Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Shimano to Lews conversion...Lew's reels are very nice from the low end to the higher models. Smooth like oil sliding on oil. Can take a little re-training of the thumb and some dialing in at first, very "fast" and free spools. Also have more drag than a Shimano, something to keep in mind especially if using 8# or 10# for sticks and cranks. Happy with mine so far, but still using Curados and Chronarchs as well. The old Curado 100's throw a redfin better for me than the Lews. Even the cheapest Lews (no magnets) will flat bomb a spook. Reluctant to sell my Shimanos until I have more time in with the Lews. Lews are definitely lighter and more comfortable.
