fishinwrench Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 Here's the "strap teaser" complete with part # for the correct kind of strap. The strap is folded over a 1/4" dia. foam cylinder and lashed together with Power Pro braid. Tie in a split ring as you finish it up and trim the bottom "wing" a bit shorter than the top and fray the tails just a bit. You don't need to "fuzz it up" any more than shown, the gar will do it for you...and do it better than you will. I put googly bubble eyes on it...... but hell I put googly bubble eyes on EVERYTHING That part is optional. After it gets soaked it has a fluke type action just under the surface.
Guest Brian B. Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 Hey!!! By gosh that's MuleTape!! Why heck yeah, the aramid yarn (?kevlar) that those are wound with is super "tangly"... I could see where that would get a gar all snaggled up.

fishinwrench Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 He's not lying and has been scolded for it many many times. Here we go again..... Reasons that Googly Bubble Eyes Rock: 1. They are Eyes. 2. They float (add buoyancy). 3. I have an unending supply cuz my g/f is a crafty freak. 4. They annoy Ronnie Moore.

hoglaw Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 FF, what's your success rate on actually getting a hook in their mouth? The frayed rope/strap appears to be the way to go, but there's just something disappointing about not being able to hammer them with a hookset (plus a break off with nylon probably means a dead fish when he can't open his mouth again).
Feathers and Fins Posted July 17, 2013 Author Posted July 17, 2013 100% in their mouth about 20% actual hook set and hold. Live minnows will increase it to about 30% it is hard to set a hook in bone. Even if you do get it set and the fish does a lot of head shakes your landing percentage drops to about 5% to 10% at best I would guess. The rope method is a much higher landing rate up to about 80 to 90%. I have never found a gar to date with its mouth locked shut from any foreign objects like a fly designed for them. Not saying it cant happen but I have never seen it. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
J-Doc Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 Crap.....all this fuss over gar fishing. First he gets me trolling, then he gets me wanting to chase stripers, and now I'm actually thinking about throwing for gar just to pass the time and have some fun. Might even clean and grill one. Just so I can imitate Glen and Mitchell from Swamp People "that gar's some good eatin' man. Oh ye-yah baby!!" F&F = Evil influence and chief disturber of my bass fishing habit Need marine repair? Send our own forum friend "fishinwrench" a message. He will treat you like family!!! I owe fishinwrench a lot of thanks. He has been a great mechanic with lots of patience!
