Justin92297 Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 I'm sure that is a grass carp, catch those out of the Osage all the time
Old plug Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 Justin do you catch any really big one over 20 lbs. I would like to catch them if they are hard fighters.would be a good challenge on light tackle.
Ham Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 Another vote for grass carp. What was it doing hitting a tiny torp. You're a lucky guy. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
Mitch f Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 Might be a good time to clear this up... Are there 4 types of carp in Mo? 1. Regular golden colored carp? 2. Grass Carp (Amiur)? 3. Asian Silver carp 4. Asian big head carp "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
Members Papermouth King Posted July 22, 2013 Members Posted July 22, 2013 Bet that was a blast. We have caught quite a few on slow moving topwaters. In ponds a lot of times they will hit a small jig drifting under a small float.
mic Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 Plus the flying carp, if I remember correctly, slim up real bad once out of the water.
MOsmallies Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 The Asian Silver Carp are the "flying ones". When fishing up on the big river, we refer to them as "Big Stupids"... You run your bait through a school of em and you think your lure just got attacked by a bull shark. Only to realize you just nailed about three or four in the back. Every once in a while you snag one on the back or tail and the fight is on. You will think your snagged, to the point we'll turn the boat around to go after the lure, only to have them take of on a long, long drag peeling run. I've caught em up to 50 lbs on bass tackle and it's a blast. Get em to the boat slit their gills since they're invasive and let the turtles go to town on em.
Kayser Posted July 29, 2013 Posted July 29, 2013 Grass carp. White meat, good fried. You just have to know how to clean one. If you want to catch more of them, you could try chumming with corn and using cherry tomatoes. WARNING!! Comments to be interpreted at own risk. Time spent fishing is never wasted.
Blazerman Posted July 29, 2013 Posted July 29, 2013 Back when I worked on a golf course, the course had 5 lakes and they all had grass carp in them to keep the weeds down. Whenever I cut the grass by the ponds, I would shoot the grass clippings into the pond and the carp would slurp them off the surface. It was fun to watch because they were some as big as 30”. When I told some guys I worked with about it they didn’t believe me so I told them to come and check it out. Once they saw it one guy went back to his truck and grabbed a rod and came back to fish for them. He ended up catching them by using a small treble hook baited with grass with no weight. After that we all started doing it until we ended up having a contest to see who could get the biggest one. They were really hard fighters and fun to catch.
