Gavin Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 The X-Rap is a dog, IMO...catches fish when they are eating everything...rarely when they are neutral.
Old plug Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Everyone goes through the lure craze i think some time or another. I have i guess 400 worms all count in my locker. Boxes of all sizes of worm weight plus split shot. Those and jigs take upa lot of space. The only thing is that are nearly all in some natural color. Even though i tend to specialize i still cannot get out if these places without buying more.
Champ188 Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Yeesh!! 26$ for a crankbait?? Ive never fished megabass baits (not a poor mans bait)...but are they really that much better than an X-rap for 1/4 the price? Im sure it works great...it sure looks awesome...but I would be so afraid to lose it that it would just look pretty in my tackle box! That being said....eventually ill buy one...dig it deep into a stump and jump in after it. ha! There are situations when name-brand lures cost more only because of the name and actually do not perform better than a cheaper knockoff. This is not one of those cases. When fishing the ultraclear waters of Table Rock with a lure that sits motionless in front of the fish for long periods of time, it pays to go the extra mile and throw a top-quality lure. Megabass has some of the most realstic finishes on the market today. Cold-water bass can be fussy. Best to give yourself every advantage when trying to get them to buy into the fake food you're trying to sell them.
Quillback Posted August 15, 2013 Author Posted August 15, 2013 Having Megabass baits in your tacklebox will cost justify getting a plug knocker if you don't already have one.
Larry Eby Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 Rarely have I been able to retreive a jerk bait successfully with a plug knocker. Buy a good quality extendable pole retreiver like the DotLine extendable lure retreiver. It will pay for itself in a short period of time. Also works good during spawn when your pitching shallow.
Quillback Posted August 16, 2013 Author Posted August 16, 2013 I've had good luck with the plug knocker on jerkbaits, I spooled the line that comes with the plug knocker to an old Penn 310, and mounted it on a stout halibut rod that I cut down to the first eyelet.
Champ188 Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 I've had good success with the same set-up QB. I bought some of that ultra cheap 70-pound catfish mono (believe the brand is Omni) from Walmart and spooled it on an old 5500C baitcaster that I wasn't using anymore and mounted it on an old rod handle that I cut off below the first guide. One key for me is I use the BPS plug knocker that is fish-shaped and has three little chains hanging from it. Those chains get tangled up in the hooks nearly every time and allow me to pull the bait free.
GNSfishing Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 I use the same BPS plug knocker attached to a large retractable dog leash, works great and is fairly compact to store in the boat.
abkeenan Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 I also go with the retractable dog leash rig with the old blue David Fritz lure gripper retriever attached. Has saved me COUNTLESS baits, mostly being jerk baits. Its been a real life saver and has actually made me a better fisherman in the fact that I have no fear of throwing or losing a jerk bait/cranker in an area littered with trees or brush therefore I get more bites. Have been using this setup for about 5 years and have lost just 1 bait in that time and that was because the wind was just HOWLING down a creek in Long Creek and just could not get the boat positioned right or held long enough to get it. Still bitter about losing that Norman Flake McStick. hahaha.
*T* Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 How can I justify buying new jerkbaits if I don't lose one once in a while? Just kidding, it hurts to lose any of them and recent years have mostly been using Megabass & Luckycraft jerkbaits, so you know how much that can hurt. Not just the cost but not having that particular bait for use. Similar to other's comments, I currently use retractable dog leash with an old rubber-coated lure retriever with like 4 or 5 chains below it. Must have save $1,000+ in retrieved lures over many years with this. "Water is the driving force of all Nature." -Leonardo da Vinci
