Members Middleton369 Posted September 23, 2013 Members Posted September 23, 2013 Do you prefer to catch shad for bait or buying some on the way? I've done fairly well on cut bream in the past but it's tough to beat shad, especially for the occasional striper. Would love to get ahold of some skipjack, it doesn't get any better than that bait wise!
bfishn Posted September 23, 2013 Author Posted September 23, 2013 I always bring a box of nightcrawlers, just in case you can't net any shad, you can rod-n-reel up some bluegill or carp. Most of the time you can easily catch plenty of bait near the ramp in the slack water behind the lockwall. Don't use a thrownet from a boat in current, if it hangs up and you've got the rope around your wrist, the boat drifts away and... you get the picture. Ham 1 I can't dance like I used to.

I'm planning to bank fish there and am wondering about Shad. Do I pretty much need to buy some on the way down if I don't have a boat? What's a good bait store to use locally (I Googled Lakeside and had no luck). Could I use night crawlers and catch enough panfish to have a decent amount of baitfish?
hoglaw Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 You can't buy live shad as far as I know. If you can't throw a net, you can catch plenty of bream on night crawlers I'm sure.
bfishn Posted August 14, 2015 Author Posted August 14, 2015 Lakeside's nothin' but a deserted quad of gas pumps now. Too bad. The closest decent bait shops left that serve the big tailwater market are in Van Buren & Russellville. Can't find those 8oz bank sinkers and 4" goldfish just anywhere. Best bet for bait now with regular flow all summer is a cast net. From the bank, the accessible area is all riprap, so you can't let it reach the bottom or you'll lose it. Watch what others do and follow suit. For rod & reel bait go to the shallowest end of the backwater by the lock (all the way to the right on the bank). Rod & reel in the day for bait there, and toss the net at dusk & dark farther down. Setup to fish near the extreme far end of the parking and cast towards the end of the dike that extends from the lock wall. Fish as near any current as you can (but not necessarily in it). If you hit some good baits keep a few of the best alive in a bucket for the flatheads. Don't get greedy. 2 or 3 lively baits beats a bucketful of dead. Chunk and mangle the rest for the blues. Enjoy! A hot nght below the dam is prime time. Daryk Campbell Sr 1 I can't dance like I used to.

I'm rapid;y getting too old for it and if they are covered in ice. I don't think its possible. Quillback Posted December 19, 2022 Posted December 19, 2022 Might get a little sketchy in a few days.

It's a little early for the sauger anyway, especially this year with late-to-arrive cold water. That applies to the local stripers too, the deal I told you about was always over by December when I did it, but has been (much) later the last couple years.
