Coosa Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 I do a lot of kayak fishing but I have been thinking about buying a canoe so I can try to get the rest of the family to go have a little fun with me. I have 10 yr old twins who love to fish. I really was in no hurry to make a purchase since winter is about here but I came across this for $50 on Craigslist. Now I know absolutely nothing about canoes so I was wondering is this worth buying and putting a little work into or would I be better off just spending some $ later this spring. Though it might be a fun winter project. Would mostly be fishing rivers. This is the only pics they had. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
fishinwrench Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 It's worth fittybucks for sure, but if your budget will allow I'd keep shopping for a decent plastic or fiberglass canoe. What make is that one anyway, I don't recognize it.
Greasy B Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 Yeah, that boat will be noisy, will grip rocks and the keel will make it hard to turn when on a river. It would be a good pond boat, a bargain too. His father touches the Claw in spite of Kevin's warnings and breaks two legs just as a thunderstorm tears the house apart. Kevin runs away with the Claw. moguy1973 Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 Its worth $50 in aluminum probably... -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
Wayne SW/MO Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 If I were going to put a family with 2 10 year old's in a canoe it would be nothing less than an Old Town Discovery 169 or a Guide 160. There are lots of used ones around and most important they are very stable and the kids can be kids in one. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Guest Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 Aluminum canoes are great on a budget, they sound like car wrecks on a gravel bar though
Bill B. Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 Don't forget the dreaded aluminum itch. That's what you get after sitting on an aluminum seat all day while wearing wet jeans or cut-offs. At least, I used to get it.
Gavin Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 For $50 you cant go wrong..That would be a good boat to mount a 3hp, or a troller on and run it around a small lake, pond, or a big slow river...Wouldn't want it on anything shallow, or twisty...but it would do in a pinch. I'd save up for a 17' tandem in Royalex or Polylink...no keel, not too much rocker.

Jerry Rapp Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 with 2 ten year olds, get a flat bottom jon boat for a couple of years. Take them perch jerkin on flat water. When they get to 13 or 14 years old and maybe still want to be around you, then think about a canoe or even kayaks for them. But I bet by then they could care less about being in a boat with you, or even close to you. Good luck!
