Members Mottled Sculpin Posted December 17, 2013 Members Posted December 17, 2013 I'm in the market for a new spin casting fishing reel and am looking for suggestions. I'd like a reel that can handle getting wet and thrown around a little bit. I largely fish for smallmouth on various Missouri steams. Any thoughts?
Mitch f Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 Mottled, Are you talking spin cast or spinning reels? "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
fishinwrench Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 Mitch, seriously ? I found love with the ABU Gracia 503ALB for a beater, it handles the elements of canoe/truckbed/wading life really well.

The man says spin casting, just wanted to clarify! It's possible he was talking about a push button reel "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
marcusearlt Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 Here you go, this combo is what it costs for just the reel, a Pflueger President, at most places. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Fishing/Rod-Reel-Combos/Spinning-Combos|/pc/104793480/c/104762880/sc/105791580/Pflueger-PresidentCabelas-Tourney-Trail-Split-Grip-Spinning-Combo/1325675.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fspinning-combos%2F_%2FN-1102843%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_105791580%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253BMMcat104793480%253Bcat104762880&WTz_l=SBC%3BMMcat104793480%3Bcat104762880%3Bcat105791580 "If people don't occasionally walk away from you shaking their heads, you're doing something wrong." Members Mottled Sculpin Posted December 17, 2013 Author Members Posted December 17, 2013 My bad, I meant spinning reel. I gave up the zebco 33 many years ago! Thanks for the suggestions so far.
Members Smallmouth Addict Posted December 17, 2013 Members Posted December 17, 2013 My Shimano Stella has survived the Thelon River in the Nunavut several times along with hunting no name lakes in Quetico. Never had a better reel. The President is very solid for price. Only two I use.
fishinwrench Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 The man says spin casting, just wanted to clarify! It's possible he was talking about a push button reel Ya gotta take in ALL the information man. A dude looking to buy a spincast reel for smallies wouldn't even know what a Mottled Sculpin is, much less call himself that. LMAO Though he might use one for bait....and call it a madtom.
Old plug Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 Do not go overboard with spending. I have some I paid less then 20 bucks for. I fish them many days a year for a few years and throw them away. Buying a expensive reel might not be the thing if you do not fish it a awful lot. I have a friend that owns a reel repair business and he has a back counter loaded with expensive reels to repair both spinning and bait casting. I believe its because they are much more complicated and part failure is higher.
