Fishing Goal For 2014

There are three species of bullhead. At least 5 species of sucker. Two species of stone roller. A few species of chubs. Two species of sculpin. Gizzard shad will hit a crappie jig. skipjack shad. Cutt bows. Really stretching it I can come up with about 60 possible species and I have to get 52 of those. Unlikely at best.

Ham will have to tap into the "Rough" fish category to do this. Bowfin, being the sportiest rough fish I know, ( I can hook you up on some of those). Long and shortnose gar would count for two. There's different kinds of suckers and carp as well as catfish. I'm sure it can be done, but will take a lot of time that I sure don't have enough of.

Hams there's a drainage ditch here on the farm, that you probably could knock a dozen off your list in one day.

Out of boredom we tossed our hardware, dozens of 5 foot long fish snapped at our lures without getting stuck. One my goals for 2014 is to tie up some nylon rope flys a tangle with these big boys.

I fish for two species. Well 5 species if you count large mouth, small mouth, spotted, and mean mouth as seperate species. My goals are more limited because of that.

I want to master jig fishing with the jika rig for both species.

I want to find and understand a new pattern for each species to add to my repetoir. (No, not A Rig)

I want to become better at reading pattern changes - maybe even anticipating them.

A couple of weeks ago, an idiotic woman, fooling with a cell phone turned into me and totaled my 2001 Dodge Durango. I had just done $300 worth of front end work to it and bought $400 worth of new tires. The Dodge had 186,000 miles on it, but it was paid for. The cop who ticketed her said he would have added a another charge of gross stupidity to her ticket if he could have. Well, her insurance company settled and I found myself a pristine 2004 Ford F-150 4.6L with only 54,000 actual miles on it. So I'm stuck with a car note again, but at least I have some decent wheels under me. So my goal for 2014?...To go fishing as often as I can get my lazy carcass out to do it. I'm only 27 miles from Roaring River, 35 miles from Crane Creek, 45 miles from Taneycomo and 47 miles from the Beaver Tailwater, so the only excuse I can come up with for not fishing is laziness. Yesterday at Cabela's in Rogers, I renewed my non resident Arkansas fishing license, so now if the weather will just warm up a bit, I'm off. But as I write this, it's 25 degrees outside, going down to 14 tonight. So the wait begins. I don't try and set any specific fishing goals, just to get out and fling some flies. At 67, I just want to fish, and my goals are really simple.

greasy B--------- Do not make one make 3 or 4 because they do not last very long. What you seen was almost certainly lone nose gar. They have 4 rows of teeth in those bills two rows straight up and down and two rows on the outside pointing at a angle. That nylon rope will get so tangled up in there you will loose a good position of it trying to get it back. Also get your self a glove. It should be heavier than a convention garden glove because the angle teeth will come right through most gloves. Use a short steel leader as well. Try it on light tackle. I call it a poor mans salt water fishing. I started doing it last August. Wonderful way to beat the dog days.
