Quillback Posted February 10, 2014 Author Posted February 10, 2014 A couple of years ago when we had a couple of nights of below zero temps, including one night where it hit -14, I hoped for a dillo die-off. It did not happen.

bfishn Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 Looks like it breaks Wednesday. 10 straight days of well above freezing. I can't dance like I used to.

Old plug Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 I had high hopes of the dillos getting cut down too. After all they are not suppose to be able to adapt to the cold. but I was up at my Daughters this weekend in Hermann Mo this past weekend. She tells me her neighbor killed one in her Yard about a week and a half ago.
Justin Spencer Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 I saw several dead ones after that first extended cold snap, guessin this will kill some more. I think this snow on the ground for a week or more is what really hurts them. It cert*inly wont kill them all, but I bet it will help. Wayne SW/MO Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 I suppose it depends on who you read, but I've read a couple of articles that say a prolonged cold winter is hard on them. Some say they can only survive the cold for so long. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

I feed the birds at my home and it is amazing how much food they have been going through this winter. Two winters ago, after we had a bad ice storm, guy down by us on the Meramec found three dead dillos under his canoe that was upside down and leaning against his porch.
Old plug Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 I heard that also and the conservation commission swears by it. But it looks to me like they have somehow done some adapting.
