Gavin Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 Nice tie! Don't think you need a book. Time on the water and some advice on OA is all you need.
Quillback Posted February 3, 2014 Author Posted February 3, 2014 I ordered the L.L. Bean Fly fishing for Bass 2nd edition. I'm a book reader, I enjoy reading fishing stuff. I would have liked to pick up a copy of Lefty Kreh's bass fly fishing book, but it is ridiculously priced, even used it was over $50.
Flysmallie Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 I'm like Quil, I like to read stuff. But there are no good books on flyfishing for bass and I've read a bunch. At least not since I looked last and just gave up. I'll be honest and say that this was several years ago. But most of it is either a long advertisement for something they want to push on you or it's a trout fisherman that writes a bass fishing book. According to them you only need a standard popper, a sneaky pete, a wooly bugger and a clouser, oh oh oh probably a sculpin pattern, don't forget that, And you will need a 9' 6wt. It's the only thing that will work. And in a lot of ways they are right. All these items will catch you some smallies, but what do you do when you get bored with a bunch of 10 inch fish? You start thinking about it from the bass fishing world and try to merge them together. That's when you will find good success. Lots of good information around here. Read, ask, apply. That's all it takes...........oh and an 8 or 9wt rod. Â Â
Quillback Posted February 3, 2014 Author Posted February 3, 2014 Yeah I'm thinking 8wt. I'll let you guys know what I think of the LL Bean book - hopefully it's not a disguise for a bunch of LL Bean ads.

Flysmallie Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 Yeah it might be good. I enjoyed the ones I read but they all said the same thing. Let us know how it is. I need something good to read. Â Â
Al Agnew Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Have you tried "Smallmouth Fly Fishing", by Tim Holschlag? Concentrates on stream smallies, but is a pretty good book for those wanting something from somebody who doesn't approach it from a trout angler's perspective.

His father touches the Claw in spite of Kevin's warnings and breaks two legs just as a thunderstorm tears the house apart. Kevin runs away with the Claw. He becomes captain of the Greasy Bastard, a small ship carrying rubber goods between England and Burma. Michael Palin, Terry Jones, 1974

I haven't read one of the smallie books yet. But if I don't like the LL Bean book, I might take a gander. I'm primarily going to focus on largemouth and spots in the local lakes. Not that the stray smallie won't be welcomed.
fishinwrench Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Ok wrench, it's your turn. You must have remembered me in the past saying what a douchebag I think Holschlag is I've quit doggin' on him because the poor dude looks like he is about to croak.
