MaxDrown Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 We've done two long float trips with our scout troop on the Eleven Point River. It's tough to get a legitimate 50 miles on this river. However, the EPR provides a remote location with relatively few people, and Brian gives the Scouts a great rental rate. I'm wondering, are there other rivers in Missouri that would be great for 50-mile float trips appropriate for young Scouts? We'd need to cover 50 miles on the water, have location on the banks to stop and camp, get an affordable rate on canoe rentals, and avoid the party floaters as much as possible. We will float from Mon-Fri and try to be off the river early on Saturday. The scouts will be picking up trash all along the way and will practice the principles of Leave No Trace. Please feel free to send me a private message if you prefer. -- Max Drown

ColdWaterFshr Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Gasconade, Meramec. I'd stick with either the 11 Pt or Current though.
moguy1973 Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 I concur. Current for something like that since there are many accesses to start and end at to make 50mi total and it's a rather swift river so it would be easy to do in 3 days even if you take your time. Cedar to Powder Mill would be 50mi total and a great float... Baptist to Two Rivers would be a good one too. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
Greasy B Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 The upper Gasconade is the only fifty mile float where you won't have to tolerate jet boat traffic. The upper two thirds of Big Piney would be a good choice too. His father touches the Claw in spite of Kevin's warnings and breaks two legs just as a thunderstorm tears the house apart. Greasy B Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Gasconade Hills Resort is just upstream from Hazelgreen. Even if you float above or below their usual rental floats they may be willing to make the long trip for your troop. On some stretches of the upper G. gravel bars a little harder to come by than on other rivers but you should be fine. Most of the surrounding land is private but it's lightly developed and I have never had a bad encounter with anyone. This trip would be best before late summer when waters levels can drop to a point where you might drag a bit. Wayne SW/MO Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 If the weather cooperated, the Missouri would be a nice trip that could be combined with some history. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
