Unfortunately, Taney is the unofficial 5th trout park in many ways. I have seen people do this before and it's hard for me to worry about what they are doing as I would rather concentrate on my day (I'm selfish :) ). I would say that the guy who holds a nymph down at his feet and releases it into current is bothersome, if nothing else but for the desperation one must possess in order to fish in this manner and disregard how silly he looks to everyone else.

Realistically, these people probably have few chances of catching quality fish in a wilder stream(the White, Norfork or Current rivers) because Taney is a very fisher friendly tailwater. It is sad to see that it is being passed down to another generation, but I guess you can look at it and say a dad is at least spending time with his kid.

Its is called chumming. I cannot say it is wrong. There are many other things used to in attracting fish besides this. They could all fall into that category.

Grizzly hit the nail on the head...Taney used to be one of my favorite bodies of water to fish until it got so bad. At this point the only major difference between wading upper Taney on a nice weekend day and fishing one of the trout parks is the $3 tag. When I would see a group of shufflers doing their thing and pulling half the fish off a particular area by shuffling I got to where I just wanted to go grab one and hold his head underwater until he saw the error of his ways...which is why I spend most of my fishing time trying to avoid those kinds of people.

There are areas on the upper lake that are ideal for shuffling and there are areas that are not. You need current and gravel to shuffle.

If you really look at the wadable part of the lake, most areas are not good for shuffling thus you can get away from them if you want. I fish the Rocking Chair down to the boat ramp, catch nice fish, and never see anyone shuffling because the bottom and current isn't conducive to shuffling. Boat ramp to Trophy Run- the chute there may be good for shuffling but don't know if they've found it. By boat- the whole trophy area can be waded if you have a boat that can take you there.

So the only area that shufflers use is from the cable down to Big Hole. If that's the only water you like to fish then you're affected by the shuffler's technique. But Taney's much more than just this quarter-mile stretch.

BTW- using your hand to fish like that is illegal I believe although it is splitting hairs.

Wait a minute.... So, all you got to do is wade out a few yards, drop your fly in the water, start dancin' and the trout come right up and eat your fly??? Why was this never mentioned in the dozens of fly fishing text books I have read over the decades??? This seems much more efficient than those other ways.

Ethics Ness they say.I looked it up MDC does have a list of ethics. Basically it is a practice of attacting fish. something akin to chumming. But it certainly is not against the law. I know people use handfulls of corn to draw carp and buffalo in. Also poeple that chop up shad and chum with them.
