managed = not natural. I am glad you enjoyed the catching. Any of us could catch them there. If that is what you want and spend your money on, go for it.

I'm thinkin Jerry's favorite bait is called a Buzzkill? :have-a-nice-day:

I don't care if there was a scuba diver secretly hooking up the bass for him. Seein your old man catch the biggest fish of his life is a great story!

Enjoyed reading about it !

Creel and legth limits as well as stocking is management not much is natural anymore, I'll take 11 pound unnatural over 11” unnatural.

Great story. The best part of that whole entire trip was the fact that you took your dad and enjoyed it with family................I would bet that you probably have plans to take your kids in the future :) I bet your not sad at all that it was your Dad that caught that 11lbr and not you...His smile said it all!

Hear me out here before jumping to conclusions .... Jerry has a point, but this was not the most sensitive time or place to make it.

First, congrats Biglerma on your great trip and moreso on sharing some special time with your dad. You, your dad and an 11-pound swamp donkey ... now that's quality time!

I also hear what Jerry's saying ... he's probably a lot like me in that his greatest joy in fishing these days comes from the hunt. When fishing managed C&R lakes like this one in Alabama, the hunting part has been eliminated. They are there and you collide with them upon arrival. You throw, you catch, done deal. Sure, some days are still better than others, but you don't have to wonder if you're around fish.

I'd venture to say that Babler, Beck and other "seasoned" guides take their greatest joy in putting clients on fish rather than catching em themselves. I'm the same way, except my "client" is Donna most of the time. I've also been known to take care of my golf pro since he takes care of my swing, such as it is.

I think a lot of it has to do with experience ... Jerry has no doubt reeled in his share of bass, including big ones. So have I. Not to say I don't still enjoy catching them, but I'd truly rather see Donna catch them than me, especially if they're big. My joy comes from finding them and figuring out how to get them to bite.

Nothing wrong with fishing manged lakes whatsoever. Heck, Biglerma and his dad drove a loooong way to fish that one and probably paid an access fee once they got there. He was upfront about where he went and what type of lake it is.

By the same token, nothing wrong with Jerry not liking that type of fishing, although like others I thought the method of saying so was pretty harsh.

Different strokes for different folks.

That place is awesome, and you had a great trip. Loved the photos -- you could see you were having fun. It was also nice to see you fishing in shirt sleeves as we fished there in the snow this year when you couldn't wear enough clothes. I envy you that.

The lake may be managed intensively, but it's not easy fishing by any stretch, and any large bass is a bonus. Don't let anyone take away from the pleasure of what you did.

For me, it's a bit like fishing in Alaska or any remote destination. You get to see things that you wouldn't on TRL or Beaver. It's almost like you are fishing in a lake 100 years ago--big bass in schools feeding or sipping shad on the surface. It was a great experience for my group, and I'd love to go back.

Having said that, I caught my personal best largie there this year, and while I'm happy to have it in my avatar, it doesn't mean as much to me as it would if I'd caught it while fishing by myself in one of the lakes around here.
