I fish the Ned on Nanofil with about a 2 or 3 foot fluoro leader. The casting distance is amazing, hooksets and sensitivity are better, and I can see that bright white line very easily. I've fished it on 6lb fluoro and just couldn't get the same results out of it, but I know a lot of guys that use straight fluoro that do very well and some guys that use braid and a leader. Drop shot rod is certainly the way to go. I pour my own heads and use a 3/32 ounce 95% of the time even in water to about 25' when the wind allows it. Yes it takes half the day for it to hit the bottom (when the fish will let it) but IMO, that light head is what gives it the slow fall and hapless look that makes it almost impossible for the fish to resist at times.

Thanks. I get to come down on friday and fish so I am trying to get as prepared as possible beforehand. I will restring with 6lb. In regards to the jig head, arent the fish a little deeper still? Thats why I was thinking 1/8 oz but I am definitely new to all of this so any tips are appreciated.

Think I would eliminate the shallow (15' and less) stuff first. Might surprise yourself. The little rig will catch them if they are up, and they are up more than we expect a lot of the year. That is a very basic part of the system.

It is tough trying to "unlearn" what we have spent years learning. For the little rig shallow and light is the place to start.

Use the line you like, but keep the terminal end at six pound. I have done the leader deal and did not enjoy it, but many do, and many of them are much better sticks than I will ever be.

I like a 1/8oz head most of the time and I can throw that 1/8oz Ned rig a frickin' mile on 8lb Yozuri Hybrid. I fish the dam area the majority of the time so the water is deeper there as a whole so it gives me a little more flexibility to hit them in 5-10 FOW or 25-35 FOW. I like having a little extra weight with the 1/8oz just in case the wind does kick up...which is pretty often on the rock.

You need a hand model to hold your fish for a photo. Tha big ole ugly thumb makes it look like a perch mouth ! :have-a-nice-day:

would academy or bpro have the right jigs for the ned rig? I read other posts where people are making their own...i don't have that set up. I know it needs to be a #2 hook?

You mean to tell me you have the jewels to throw the words "big" and "ugly" in someone else's direction? LOL

Hard to find them local to the tri lakes. Mondo Tackle has some online, Tackle Warehouse has the Outkast money jig, or direct from Gopher.

Hooks in the #4 to #1 size will work. Size 2 is just a nice in between. In a pinch you can run the appropriate weight ball or fb heads, especially if they are poured on good hooks. I did that the first year, and they worked. Not quite the same effect, but if they are all you can find they will do.

Between the Ned and the jikka, you may give up other methods for soft plastic entirely.

RPS I remember a while back you said you made your own Jika rigs. I forgot what size split rings you said works best though. Do you mind refreshing my memory?
