Hog Wally Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 Paint ball gun is good idea. Pellet or bob gun bad idea I nuisance hunt in stl county and even though I kill a pile of deer I hate seeing pellets and somehow even bb's buried between hide and meat. Mostly in the rib cage area? Why there? My garden is getting hammered as well. 3 groundhogs so far. I shot one before church and left him then I got busy all day. Next day the buzzards got on him and trampled half my stuff eating on him What the heck.

ness Posted September 17, 2014 Author Posted September 17, 2014 Fall garden is on its way. I pulled all the maters but a couple, probably should have done them too, but there were a few good looking ones coming on. Did taters for the first time this year. 4 Rubbermaid containers full. Didn't get much of a harvest. 'Fingerlings' were, well, finger sized at best. Did a boiling potato and got a few decent-sized ones, a few good ones with strange shapes, and a ton of small to tiny ones. Gonna have to think this over. Not a lot of trouble, just not sure it's worth it. It's not like you can't find potatoes anywhere. Still getting a few banana peppers and some Anaheims. I pickle the bananas, but the Anaheims have been so few and far between I'm just drying them. Lettuce, spinach, radishes, beets, peas. Still getting a few beans and some Swiss chard. John
ness Posted September 17, 2014 Author Posted September 17, 2014 Geez tippet7, I forgot about that post. Lobster, cream cheese and Anaheims -- that's BRILLIANT! I love green chiles. Tonight my entire family bailed on me for dinner, so I hit a Mexican joint near here that does a pork chile verde RIGHT! That's my litmus test for Mexican. Kinda stinks that I haven't had much of a harvest this year, but I can make a pretty mean chile colorado with the dried ones. John
BilletHead Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 Fall, it almost upon us. We got our lettuce in and it looks good but a bit sparse in places. Other than that some turnips in the deer food plot. Many peppers on the assorted plants and more coming on. Hoping they hang in there so if and when the hen of the woods mushrooms come on I can pickle some and add the peppers. When I quit putting off it I am going to add another set of boards to the big planter I have the lettuce in. They are 12'X4'. I want to make a cover so I can have the greens into the upcoming winter. I have the plastic dome cover but the plastic needs replaced every couple of years and the plastic is not too cheap. The span is pretty large. I have priced Plexiglas. About 70 bucks a 4'X8' sheet. Thinking I could do three 4'X4' frames to cover the bed. I know two sheets will be pricy but last long. Have enough wood here to make the frames. I know a guy who kept lettuce all winter a couple of years back. He surrounded his bed with small bales of hay and then covered, BilletHead "We have met the enemy and it is us", Pogo If you compete with your fellow anglers, you become their competitor, If you help them you become their friend" Lefty Kreh " Never display your knowledge, you only share it" Lefty Kreh "Eat more bass and there will be more room for walleye to grow!"
