I am curious, you said you like the trigger on the casting rod you are using with a spinning reel. What possibly could that trigger be doing, since it is on top of the rod now, unless you are holding the rod like it was a casting rod with the spinning reel up in the air, and cranking it backwards.

My goodness, Wrench, how could you overlook the most efficient labor-saving device ever, the classic reel-on-a-dipnet combo?

Dangit ! No kidding! LOL

Simonthegolfer - If it works for you and its comfortable then more power to you. Keep using what's comfortable. I would think the trigger would get in the way of your palm when holding the rod, but you probably just have your hand placed a little further back. The main thing your probably handicapping yourself on is casting distance. Spinning rods have much larger guides closer to the reel that account for the way the line comes off a spinning reel. The larger guides create less slap on the line resulting in longer casts. The smaller guides on a casting rod are going to slap against the line much more and reduce casting distance.

Wrench - Those pics were pretty darn funny!

The only setup I see people use that drives me nuts is a spinning combo held upside down with the reel on top of the rod and the fisherman reeling backwards. To each his own, but that one drives me bonkers for some reason... Disclaimer: If this is what you are doing, then my apologies :)

We have a local who fishes with a spinning reel (on a spilling rod) but held upside down and cranks the reel backwards. He catches fish with it, and after much harassment and offering to move the reel handle to the right hand side for him, I think he does it just to irritate folks. I have seen him fish with a "regular" one before as well, but like to break out the crazy combo when there are a lot of people to watch.

Hey if it works for you that is great. I use old 9 ft flyrods with a spinning reel on the end for dipping trees for crappie. It works great and gave me a use for a rod I no longer used. Plus it cost less that a B and M dipping rod.

Yep, a fly rod with a ultra-lite spinning reel (with the bail hoop removed) used to be the tool of choice for panfishers on the Salt river and it's tribs.

The bait shops and hardware stores all carried fly rods, but no fly reels or fly line.
