I just had my first Basal Cell Carcinoma (skin cancer) removed from my ear. Luckily it wasn't too deep and the roots didn't have a good hold. I guess the years of fishing and not caring too much about sunblock caught up to me. Wear your 80 spf sun protection and replace it every 2 hours is what I was told. They also mentioned new fabrics that block the ultra violet rays. Just be careful guys!

If you see me out there on LOZ in the middle of summer, you'll see me with long sleeves, long pants. a neck gator, big hat and sun gloves, and covered with sunscreen. In the last couple of years, I've had 5 spots taken out and three of them were melanoma. So I know how important it is. Even if I look goofy, I don't have much of a choice.

Luckily mine were not that deep either. 2 were on the surface and the other was a bit invasive, but they were confident it will be fine.

Just got word a friend of mine was diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma. She's going thru chemo and radiation as we speak!

So for us outdoors types, we really need to take precautions.

I am up to three basils and one very thin melanoma(on my back which hasn't been sun burned in 20 years). Blonde hair, blue eyes, fair skinned, but always tanned good after the first sun burn and peeling back in the day. My doc said these are a result of my early year sunburns, and just protect with SPF 50+ from here on out and avoid the mid day sun as much as possible. Hopefully you younger folks will take heed and protect yourself to the max while you have a fighting chance.

5 years from now 'they' will be saying that sunblock causes cancer.

Call me stoopid but I'm of the thinking that my body doesn't require commercial chemical products to survive in the climate that I was born into.

I love the sun, and the way it feels on my skin. Been "overdosing" on it all my life and have no desire to stop (or block) now.

Pretty sure that carb cleaner, nail polish and hair spray fallout is gonna kill me way before the sun does. LOL

I am with warfrat on this. I wear long sleeve fishing shirts made out of nylon or similar material all summer long out on the water. Also wear them a lot off the water. I am one of these people that cannot wear cotton in hot weather without stinking so bad in a short time that I cannot even stand myself. The shirts are cool even with the sleeves down. I also recently bought this salt water fishing cap. I do not know what it is made of but it is very light weight. Has UV protection as well. It has a cord in the back with a clip on it that attaches to your shirt to prevent it from blowing away. It is so light weight it feel like almost like its not there. It was not to cheap as I recall but it will be worth it to protect my head. Got it at Academy a couple months ago. attachment=26459:image.jpg]

Yeah, I wear a hat similar to OP's. My son-in-law calls it my Star Wars Storm Trooper Hat.

Bass Pro and Cabelas has a decent line of cool SPF clothing. I think Columbia has a decent line. It's not as cool as wearing shorts and a t-shirt in 95 degree heat, but its not too bad.

You look like that pelican that assaulted me.

Warfrat......I got 3 or 4 long sleeve fishing shirts. I got a couple a Wall Mart one at pro bass and the best deal at Academy in Springfield. SOMETIMES you walk into that place and they have stuff on sale that is a big time bargain. only thing I do not like about fishing shirts is it is getting harder all the time to not find something in wild pastel colors. I will not be seen dead out on the lake in some of those things.

Wrench come to think of it In do look like one of those pelicans. Quite a improvement. I might wear it all the time.

I know that under armour is expensive but man that stuff works, I have a couple fishing shirts and a pair the fishing shorts, the material is just so light weight the slightest breeze, will keep you cool, and the fishing specific shirts are 50+ upf rating
