David Unnerstall Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 After reading how so many of you love the Sammy I bought one. The first day I used it at Sunfish Lake it landed in a tree. I couldn't stand it -- a fifteen dollar bill just sitting in that tree. The next weekend I walked around the lake with my twenty foot extension ladder and a hand saw. Now this story is a lot longer than this but basically I was able to saw a portion of the limb that it was on. It fell into the water and it SANK. What kind of wood sinks? I stood there for ten minutes staring at the place in the lake where it sank. So I bought another one. I was fishing the St. Francis last week while turkey hunting. I had good success there two years ago during that hot dry summer with a Zara Spook so I tie on my new Sammy and was having a helluva time walking the dog until the line broke in the middle after a cast. I chased after the line but just missed it and I had waders on so could not go swimming after it. I just watched another fifteen dollar bill go floating down the river. And then it occurred to me that the manufacturer of this thing is called LUCKY- craft. That is just about more than I can stand -- Zara Spooks for me from here on.
dtrs5kprs Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 Personally, I prefer the spook in the various sizes hands down. If you can walk a spook, the sammy is almost hard to fish, it starts so easily that I end up overworking it.
ollie Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 Don't feel too bad, I never have the money for the more expensive baits so I just use the other ones as well. I do prefer the Zara Jr. Spook to the larger one however. J-Doc Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 My bait for this scenario was a rattle trap. I bet I lost 5-6 of those in a year. Same thing, cast and line snap with the bait soaring over 100ft away. I feel you pain and I too do not buy into the hype of expensive baits. The Spook and Spook Jr. are great and if they are biting topwater, they will bite a Spook Jr just about as easy as the Sammy. Tie on a front runner and then you really have a combination. That's an Ozark secret I think. Not many guys throw the front runner. Wayne SW/MO Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 I've had trees grab my Sammy's a couple of times. So far I've been half lucky, half because they were caught on branches. The other half however is that I throw them on 20/6 braid. I've been able to pull them out of the tree both times. I also like the braid for walking the dog, it floats flat on the water and with no stretch it gives positive motion to the lure. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
moguy1973 Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 I use KVD Sexy Dawgs just as effectively for half the price. And they don't stand up in the water like the Sammy's do when you stop. I also like the Damiki Dolphins. Super easy to walk and a slightly smaller profile, albeit a little more $$$ than the KVD ones. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
WeekendWarrior Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 I do just as well on the spook jr. In bone color vs. sammy

MOsmallies Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 Gavin and moguy1973 hit it on the head... Lots of better options out there now than the Sammy's in my opinion. Strike King Sexy Dawg Jr., Damiki Dolphin, Owner Cultiva Zip n' Ziggy, Ima Skimmer. I still throw the Sammy 100 and my modified Sammy 85 every now and then, but 95% of the time I'm throwing one of the other four I mentioned.
