Members KansasBoy13 Posted May 8, 2014 Members Posted May 8, 2014 So a couple years ago I caught a smaller crappie on a zara puppy(no picture of that one) at a local lake and couldn't believe it, that was very odd to me. Then last year I caught two keepers out of the same brush pile on a 7" blue fleck powerworm at a different lake, also very strange. Then today at my pond I caught one on a chug n spook jr and was surprised then to top that off I caught one on a frog. The one on the chug n spook jr really hammered it and fought really well too. To me the frog just blew me away, maybe its not that weird though? What is craziest bait you have caught a crappie on?
Flysmallie Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 Caught a nice 13" crappie on a fly rod poppers many years ago. Caught one last Sunday on a Ned rig.
fly2fish Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 A 5" hellbender in crawdad color in a rock quarry, crappie jumped like a bass a couple times. We used to fish large minnows with a slip cork set about 20 -25 deep and you did not know what you were going to catch bass or crappie. F2F
Gavin Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 1/2oz black & blue spinner bait with a 5" curly tail trailer...bout 18" long...Private Lake in Mid-Mo.
duckydoty Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 In the late 80's I bought an in-line spinner rig that was supposed to look like a school of minnows. It had 7 willow leaf blades on a wire that was 3 feet long. I caught 10 crappie overover 15 inches on it one day trolling LOZ A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!! Big Brown Trout Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 (old thread but oh well) weirdest thing i caught a crappie was one of my very very early attempts at fly tying, it looked like a really crappy imitation of the ugliest cranefly larva ever to crawl from the depths of grand lake. It was tied way sloppy and way to big and made out of cat hair i pulled out of the carpet before i vacuumed. The amazing part is I outfished the other four people there (some using live minnows) as i was the only one to catch a crappie all day. (btw the exaggerations really aren't exaggerated at all, this is all 100% serious) Let the summer of Carp, begin.
Members zosk Posted April 23, 2015 Members Posted April 23, 2015 I don't know if this is really all that strange, but I did catch a good sized one on a 4" tube jig a few years ago when bass fishing. Like I said, probably not altogether odd, but I was really surprised at the time (especially since I didn't know there were any crappie in the lake I was fishing).

stlfisher Posted May 15, 2015 Posted May 15, 2015 I caught one dead sticking a buzz bait. I was clearing out an old bird nests after I cast and when I reeled in my line there was a Crappie on it. That actually happened to me twice!
