Another reason Arky streams are better taken care of is the fines that go with them! I witnessed one fine day a gentleman get fined $600 for the violations he had from his canoe. He was fined $200 for no life jacket on board with his small kid and the other $400 went for beer cans that weren't in the mesh bag but rolling around the bottom of his boat. I have NEVER seen anything like that around here. Now whether or not he paid them or was pressed to pay them I have no idea, but that would ruin my day for sure. Plus Bird Watcher nailed it when he said most are from Ark., OK, or Ks. Most locals around here know better than to be on that stream in the summer! lol

I agree that the rules (no cans without floating coozies on them, no loose empties, strapped or bungeed coolers, etc.) and the fines that they dish out in AR a big difference maker. But when floating the kings and Buffalo I feel like I see people actively filling their canoes with any garbage they find. I try to do that where ever I float but it just seems like it is a bigger problem in AR and MO.

I am not sure what you consider local but I think anyone not looking for a floating party know to avoid most bodies of water on weekends in the summer. However, most of us do it from time to time anyway.

I guess local would be me since I'm only 20 minutes away. I have floated all the SW MO streams for over 40 years and yes I have seen more and more out of state people fishing in this area compared to say even 20 years ago. It doesn't make any difference, people are people no matter where they are from. There are plenty of white trash from MO on this stream as well. Biggest part would be demographics. Before NWA got so big, Mac Donald County was in the bottom five poorest counties in MO. Their main source of income was the occasional tourist from the KC area and weed. There use to be several free access points along the river that no one cared if you used. Now that everyone on the creek wants income from the property (rentals) the place has gone downhill. I really wish they had set limits on the canoe rentals. It is no different then say the Current which is closer to St. Louis. Let's just face the facts - our streams are getting more and more pressure on them every year. I agree MO has it's problems with trash in the streams. I wish they would fine the heck out of people who trash it like they do in Ark. Maybe then people would respect the stream more. Off soapbox now.

I have been reading this forum for months and finally got inspired enough to join. I fish the elk and it's tributaries a lot. I had an idea a while back where the outfitters all get together and offer free shuttles one weekend if you show up at the take out with a bag of trash per person. The difference would attract more business for the outfitters. A true win/win.

Elaborate some. Not a bad idea at all. Maybe offer a discount on floats that brought back X amount of trash. Not sure they would want to give up income they could have though. Still not a bad idea. Pitch it to them.

Well, I figured a weekend or two, between the holidays, offer something that encourages the floaters to bring back bags of trash. Even if you have to offer a free rental.

Or maybe just police littering as strictly as they do smoking pot on a gravel bar. Just have the fuzz come out of the woods writing big tickets.

Hmmm... War on Litter... that's one we could actually win.

I can't dance like I used to.
