Article said the guy died from anaphylactic shock. Same thing that causes some folks to die from bee stings, exposure to allergens, etc. So, not a typical snake bite death. Too bad the kids had to see that, and lost their dad.

Picking one up needs to done carefully for the sake of both parties.

Picking one up doesn't need to be done at all. They don't like it so why do it. You can use a stick to move it out of the area or just about anything else to chop it's head off.

a 9mm works pretty good, maybe not quite as good as a 12ga.

Or you could just leave them alone.

When I was mowning my Moms yard for her, I kept them cleaned out of the yard with .22lr shot shells in a handgun. Really works on them.

In almost all copperhead deaths I have read about or heard about anaphylactic shock is the cause of death.

OP a copperhead has a very fast strike and 3 or 4 times doesn't surprise me one bit and depending where he grabbed the snake and length of time he held it I see no reason it couldn't happen.

Best rule of thumb don't mess with things you don't know about.

i keep a co2 powered pellet gun in the boat, if one comes to close, a lead pellet through the head works, then put the dead snake in a crawfish trap, and wait for it to load up.
