Well against the advice of Ham (He says the river starts at Ponca) and my Wife (Thinks I am a crazy old man) I put in at Boxley and floated to Steele (Yes had to get out of Canoe to get under Ponca bridge, canoe barely cleared) Water was falling and had some color. The first half mile, fairly rough water and a ample supply of strainers. I was thinking they were right. Then like a switch no more strainers. Several interesting runs, then some nice holes in between. Had one good fish (15-17") on the ned several others, then broke off and found out I had left the ned supplies in the bass boat. No worries, switched to a 2 1/2 hula grub and continued to catch fish all day, smallmouth, few gills and goggle eys. Most smallies were the 10-12 in variety. Great day on the river and completed a bucket list goal, of floating the Buffalo from Boxley to Buffalo City. I have floated many streches several times, but had never been Boxley to Ponca. post-3086-0-25314100-1406379407.jpg Will take these guys all day everyday.

Interesting, I looked over the the side of the Boxley bridge a week ago and couldn't even see a river, only water flowing through willows. I wouldn't have thought it floatable. Timing a trip the day after a thunderstorm made It a treat to float the upper river in mid summer.

Awesome trip. I've always wondered how those smallmouth survive way up there. Some of those pools get pretty shallow and stagnant some summers. Good to know you can still catch them up there.

I think they must migrate up and down the river a little bit, but heck once they get locked nto a pool they have to wait for higher water to do anything.

More nice holes up there than expected, short but, nice deep holes.
