Fish24/7 Posted August 12, 2014 Posted August 12, 2014 HFCS710XD this is a big stick, capable of more than just crankbaiting.
Champ188 Posted August 12, 2014 Posted August 12, 2014 The only issue I had with trying to combine a big crankbait rod with the A-rig was that for big cranks, you need a parabolic action ... i.e. when loaded, the rod bends pretty much equally throughout its entire length. If you try throwing an A-rig with that kind of action, you run the risk of (A) breaking the rod or ( hooking yourself in the azz with that contraption. On the contrary, if you try to throw a big crank on a stiff, heavy action rod, you are gonna miss a lot of fish because your rod needs to be soft enough to let the fish take the bait and turn to swim away. Too stiff of a rod and he won't get hooked half the time. Bottom line for me is you need different rods, although you could probably throw a single big swimbait on your deep cranking rod.
Fish24/7 Posted August 12, 2014 Posted August 12, 2014 there's a lot of people using pool cues for their umbrellas, that's cool so long as it's somwehat forgiving. if you 're not using a parabolic action rod when using umbrella rigs you WILL lose fish you might of otherwise caught...and you will not cast as far as you could w/o it. super stiff rods that don't bend are what you DON'T want (note the parabolic bend)
Champ188 Posted August 12, 2014 Posted August 12, 2014 Well, better to go that way, I suppose, than to try and throw a deep crank bait on a broomstick.
J-Doc Posted August 13, 2014 Posted August 13, 2014 Yeah but I can sling a DD22 a country mile. Lol! I don't use mine for crankbaits. Not unless I'm throwing a 2XD and I don't often. I just take it easy and loosen drag. I haven't lost a fish on the a-rig yet and considering I'm unspooling the lreel, I don think I can get more yardage. :-) But I hear what you're saying and it makes sense. TRRANGER Posted August 13, 2014 Posted August 13, 2014 I have found TFO Temple Fork Outfitters to be a quality rod at a reasonable $100.00 price tag and designed by Gary Loomis. I am using a 7' extra heavy and a 7' heavy and seem to do really well for me.
abkeenan Posted August 13, 2014 Posted August 13, 2014 I have found TFO Temple Fork Outfitters to be a quality rod at a reasonable $100.00 price tag and designed by Gary Loomis. I am using a 7' extra heavy and a 7' heavy and seem to do really well for me. This is what my brother has for his A-Rig setup and it does an okay job. They are a bit on the heavy side but there is no doubt as to their quality of components and they well made. Reeds Sporting Goods had a sale last year buy one get one free so $50 a rod was a good deal on them.
TRRANGER Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 If you guys in the know about that sale I am really fond of all my TFO's and would like a few more. So if you can help me out that would be great.
abkeenan Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 TRRANGER, This sale was going on last year some time. It isn't currently going on and I doubt it happens again. I guess Reeds Sporting Goods just was clearing out some stock at the time.
