Alex Heitman Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 I have a 998 si/di at my console. I'm having a problem with the sonar and down imaging reading. My side imaging always works. For some reason it will quit reading depth and cut out my sonar and down imaging. It will start working again if there is a big depth change such as channel to a point. Anyway know what this could be? Also if you turn it off and back on it will work and quit working when it wants to.
GNSfishing Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 I would guess a transducer problem. I have found those type of problems with my lowrance units to be in the transducer.....
Alex Heitman Posted September 22, 2014 Author Posted September 22, 2014 I thought it might be, but my question is why does it always have a side imaging readout working correctly and then the depth, sonar, and down imaging not work all the time? Would they have different transducers or are they hooked up to the same one. I can't find another one unless it is way underneath my battery compartment.
Champ188 Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 Alex, everything runs through the same transducer, which is externally mounted (as I'm sure you know). However, as I understand it, that transducer has both side and down-imaging functions and it sounds like your down-imaging function is not working properly. I would suggest getting on bassboatcentral.com, going to the Humminbird sonar channel and asking Doug Vahrenberg for his input. He's a factory guru for Humminbird and will give you sound advice, including whether to send the unit/transducer back to the factory.
huntest Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 I have found Marine Repair Center in Springfield to be helpful 417 833-9191
Alex Heitman Posted September 22, 2014 Author Posted September 22, 2014 Thanks guys. I forgot about Doug. he really knows his stuff. I would agree its the transducer but it just doesn't make sense how it will read then quit then start again. It really sucks when you get up in the river arms and do not have a depth to go off of when you know you are shallow.
aarchdale@coresleep.com Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 I just got a new boat with a 597 DI up front that didn't work so I went and got a new transducer which I only bought the sonar because the DI was twice as much as the other and I had DI on my last boat and could really care less....anyhow now my depth doesn't read. It always says 95 ft. So I was thinking maybe the depth reading is tied in some how with the DI.. The sonar is working perfectly now. I'll be interested in what you find out.
grizwilson Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 I run two transducers one di thru hull si by the motor allows di & depth on plane if you have two could be transducer or y splitter cable loose “If a cluttered desk is a sign, of a cluttered mind, of what then, is an empty desk a sign?”- Albert Einstein
fishinwrench Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 Is your transducer angle OK ? Hasn't gotten knocked out of alignment? Side imaging isn't affected by the horizontal angle in relation to the hull, but down imaging signals are. Sounds like you are pinging off at an angle and the return signals are only able to bounce back at the transducer when coming upon or pulling away from a more vertical bottom surface.
Ranger Z22 Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 I had the same problem it is the puck transducer either loose or going out. After replacement it was fine. z22
