My dad could work magic witht he Devils Horse. He could figure out the cadence. Big fish around isolated cover post spawn would crush it.

I have the exact same LC prop bait, bought it because it used to drive the fish bonkers in the big aquarium at Cabela's in KC when I worked there. I know it sounds silly but not many bass in that tank so they didn't eat anything that touches the water like the two smaller tanks. I've been less than thrilled with the results from several efforts with it and it's probably about run out of chances to prove itself.

Topwater baits are so interesting in how they manipulate fish into biting. I've been areas loaded with smaller bass and lots of baitfish. By throwing a Pop R, I could manipulate the bass into schooling on the shad. The sound of the pop r made them think another fish was feeding and so they would start attacking the shad. Rather than wait for them to start striking and then throw the bait, I could throw the bait and get them to start striking the shad, reeel in and throw to the hottest group. It was pretty funny.

Ham, my father was and is the same way with a full size devils horse. Though I grew up in Louisiana and fishing is a bit different down there. I didn't know there was another topwater bait until I moved off to college :have-a-nice-day: Of course, I still keep a few in my possession for just the right application.

I was born in Baton Rouge at the old Lady if the Lake across the pond from the State Capital building. I grew up fishing the Spillway. 5 foot was DEEP water and the water was RARELY clear. It's been an adjustment.

Next time you're in schooling fish and they quit, fire up your outboard and fast-idle around the area for 30 seconds or so, then shut down and wait. Many times it will scatter/excite the shad and cause the bass to start feeding again..

I've heard that before but never remember to do that on the water. I think Bohannon mentioned it in a FLW article a few years back.

In that case, cut yourself a sapling and thrash the water with it like they do in those third-world countries. :)

Fat Cat Newton has already claimed that technique except he uses buck antlers to rattle them up. Lol!!!
