Quillback Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 I launched at about 0930 thinking that the bite would be better on a warm afternoon, than a cold morning. It did not go as I planned. First bank I fished, which I chose because I had caught a few keepers off of it a couple of days ago, again was a producer. Caught 3 largemouth, all keepers, had another one that got off half-way to the boat that was pulling harder than any of the keepers I had boated. All were Ned rig fish in about 10 FOW. Passed up and down that bank a couple of times after that, throwing a hair jig, jerker, and a tube, but no more bites. Motored down the lake, caught a short bass on a chunk rock bank on the Ned, moved to a cove mouth with deep trees and caught three more shorts on a grub slow rolled in 30-35 FOW, and those were the last fish I caught. I didn't get a bite from noon until I left at about 3:30 PM. So much for that warm afternoon bite idea. Talked to Mr. Babler and also to Mr. Duck and his buddy, always good to see some fellow OAF's out on the water. Water temps were 39-43 on average, appeared to warm up about a degree by afternoon.
Ham Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 It seems like the fish are consolidated into distinct areas (the biters are anyway). Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
Quillback Posted January 20, 2015 Author Posted January 20, 2015 I agree with you Ham, if you can find them, you can usually get a few out of that spot. My usual winter "milk run" spots just haven't been holding fish like they have the last couple of winters.
Bill Babler Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 Boats were running this morning before sun-up here at the Lodge this morn. Quite a bit more overcast and still warm. I had a very good day yesterday, but have a feeling that today may be the day, with the cloud cover. Lodge work and a hair cut away so it will have to be another day. http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
J-Doc Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 I want Ned lessons. Lol! I keep saying I'm going to make a trip with you Quill but this is killing me! We've got to get a trip planned so you can show me the Big M area. I'll even supply the vessel and coffee. I'm out this weekend but might be able to soon after. Need marine repair? Send our own forum friend "fishinwrench" a message. He will treat you like family!!! I owe fishinwrench a lot of thanks. He has been a great mechanic with lots of patience!
Champ188 Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 The best Ned lesson (and others) you could get can be arranged right here: http://whiteriveroutfitters.com
dtrs5kprs Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 Think that depth and shallower is something to focus on. Especially if there is a craw hatch. We get flipped out about needing to fish deep because it is cold, but those fish don't know they are cold. They are just moving where the food is. That shallow deal may not work in cold water if you fish them big or fast, but small and slow... Fish24/7 1
Fish24/7 Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 Quillback, man I would have never left that first spot, that was a mistake imo. there were more fish to be caught there if you had stuck around longer I'm surprised you left a bank that has been productive for you this week The bite turns off just as quick as it turns on this time of year. There are short feeding sprees during the course of the day. Gotta be patient. You have the hardest part figured out .. Location .
