Deadstream Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 Wrench you wouldn't believe what we "used" to catch them on in Michigan. Those days are over. Cheapest line we could buy, looked like rope. Just want a good idea of what to get for Lilleys dock fishing. I run 4 Maxima, my pals from Michigan need to replace the rope. Thanks Ham Joe Griz, I just want to give them a heads up. Any other tips?
Ham Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 Taney is a different game than the White River below BSL. I can catch them at Taney, but Phil is the Man up there. I have put a lot more time in on the White from BSL to Mountain View. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
Seth Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 I really like Pline Fluoroclear for trout. I've got a spool woth 2# and one with 4# ready to go at all times. Most of the time, I do fine with the 4#. In the summer when the streams get low and super clear, I will switch to the 2#. Many have also fallen to Trilene XL in the same strength so I am not positive the line even matters much other than the casting distance gained between 4# and 2#.
Johnsfolly Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 I use the same set-up as Seth with PLine fluoroclear in 2# and 4#. I have found that at Bennett's I get more hookup and better casting distance with the microjigs (1/125 oz) using the 2# than the 4#. I use the 4# more for small crank or jerkbaits in the bigger rivers. After hearing the tales of the nanofil, I may hve to consider that for the bigger bait fishing.
Deadstream Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 Thanks all of you. I will be a test dummy!
troutgnat Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 Listen to these guys on the Nanofil deal. I have fished side by side with Ham using the same Nanofil set-up and we absolutely whacked em'. I too, have converted over to Nanofil with a leader...It's my go to now for my trout rod, Ned rod, grub rod and who knows what next. Here's some pics from Ham and I on the White using Nanofil and jigs. Proof is in the pudding. It was blistering cold and windy this day with clear water. I do not recall having any issues with Nanofil this day other than trying to tie that alberto knot with frozen fingers so that might be something to consider. Though, you can use a triple surgeons knot which would be easier but not as strong as the former. Darren Sadler "Fishing is an Education...Often the fish 'school' me, yet I do not complain. I just keep going to class!"
Johnsfolly Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 I would like some ot that pudding. Great photos.
Terrierman Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 One other thing about nanofil. If you do happen to get a wind knot in it, they are a lot easier to get out than monofilament is.
LittleRedFisherman Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 Referring the Nano and leader, I to have been using nano on my spinning reels after watching Ham outcast me 20 feet with my CX premium on a comparable outfit. I started out using flouro as a leader, and on a lot of hangup, I seemed to break at the leader more than I liked. So on my Smallie fishing this winter, I've used 8 lb nano with an 8 pound cx premium mono leader. I have now used that on 4 fishing trips in a row, broke off several times, still that same leader, it's pretty short now, but maybe it just coincidence, but with that mono i'm not breaking off at the leader anymore (with an Alberto knot) and it's such a short piece of mono, it's still super sensitive which is cucial for dragging jigs and neds for winter bass. Just my obersavation so far! Going trout fishing next week, i'd think that the 6 pound nano to 6 pound mono leader would produce the same results as far as no breakoffs? We will see.. As to the original question, if I had to choose between the two, Mono on spinning, Fluro on casters.. There's no such thing, as a bad day fishing!

Line launching itself off the spool in a really pretty bird nest on every third cast or so got me off that.
