The tame blackberry patch I put in a couple of years back is starting to produce big time right now. The rest of the garden going well despite the deluge of rain we are and have been having. Starting to eat cherry tomatoes.

Birds have picked my black raspberries clean. Picked a few cherry maters and some more peas yesterday. Also picked a mess of Dragon Tongue wax beans.

Looking good there John!

While prowling around in the garden this morning Mrs. BilletHead found in the maze of tomato vines a nice big black krim turning red. We are so ready for that first big tomato. I am thinking this will be the best crop we have ever had so I may can some tomatoes for the first time. Got a couple of questions for the gardeners here. I have a friend (contrary to popular belief I do have a few) who tops his tomato plants when a good crop comes on. We all know there is a certain time when fruit still comes on but does not ripen. I don't know how many times there are green tomatoes hanging on into the early fall that never ripen. I remember last season I was chastised by one for not letting them ripen. Others said to cut the whole vine, hang them up and they will ripen. Oh back to my friend he says topping them and keeping them topped lets more go to the existing fruits making them better? So what say you all?

This morning too we trimmed/ topped the herbs to encourage growth and keep them from flowering. Have loaded nine trays with rosemary, basil and oregano. Sounds like a lot but when dried it will be minuscule. Will keep doing this all season and soon we will have enough for winter. Cilantro on it's downhill slide . From what I have read it prefers cooler weather and we know this is gone for the season. I am letting it go to flower and hopefully seed (coriander) so Maybe will get some of it too. I have done a second planting and we will see how it goes. I know it is cheap for a bundle in the store so if it doesn't make no big deal, just like you all nothing like growing your own.

So now to the second question. Putting some smoke to the herb (got to be careful how I word this cuz we don't smoke the herb) . I know you can buy smoked paprika although I never have really tasted any smoke in it. So what do you all think of smoking some of the assorted herbs before dehydrating? We like the smoky aspect in some dishes. We did some fire roasted salsa last season, great stuff but the smoky aspect was nil but could you imaging smoked cilantro in it?

The BilletHead does not believe it tastes like soap! Lay it on me boys (and girls),

Big old Black Krim Ness,

There is a couple of Celebrity and the yellow is a Sunny Boy. I almost just made me a mater sandwich for lunch today. Instead I had a big quarter slice of Chocolate cream pie we got from the farmers market Saturday. My Bad :)

We are definitely a few weeks behind you BH. We are just getting fruit on the tomato plants and our blackberries are hard and green. My kids like to eat the tomatoes off of the vine and do that just as they are getting a red blush. I rarely ever get to eat a truly vine ripened tomato. So I am definitely jealous of a haul of ripe tomatoes like you have pictured. Also I can't blame you on the chocolate pie. Enjoy.

Green tomatoes a problem? Never!

1. Fry them.

2. Pickle them.

3. Use them in chow chow and other relishes.

We have a lot of little tomatoes on the plants but still a ways to go before we have anything ripe enough to eat. I just gave them their forst dose of Espoma Tomatotone. I plan on fertilizing them around the first and middle of each month. I am curious to see how they do compared to before when I didn't side dress them at all. Hopefully we will get more large fruit instead of the first few tomatoes off each plant.

One a side note, we just weeded and laid down some newspaper as weed barriers around the plants. Two days later we got sme heavy wind from the storms and most of it got blown away. So mch for that idea....

Oh, can't bear to pick a green one now. So much promise, and just a little more time until perfection. Green tomatoes come late in the season for me.
