Guest Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 What do you think of the Abu Garcia Orra Power Finesse Spinning Reel? (It's currently sold out) http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Abu_Garcia_Orra_Power_Finesse_Spinning_Reel/descpage-OPF.html The Abu Garcia Orra SX Spinning Reel model is for braided line, which I use 75% of the time. http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Abu_Garcia_Orra_SX_Spinning_Reel/descpage-ORSX.html I'm debating on buying both of the Garcias, since my new shimano sahara has the "binding" problem & I'm not forking over $200 for another stradic right now. I'm looking into the larger diameter spools for 6lb florocarbon. I know Dave likes the bigger sized reels for that application.
Ham Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Hey TFR, Spend another $30 and get the Lews Team Gold Spinning in the 3000 size. The spool is large and the drag is wonderful. Light weight for its size. Of course, I use Nanofil so I have a different set of problems than the fluro on spinning guys do. You might can do some internet searching and find them cheaper than TW. Maybe. Sac River Jim 1 Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
Quillback Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 I picked up several of the "old" model Pflueger Supremes, so far I like them just as much as my one and only Stradic. $79 right now in Cabelas Bargain Cave. But, the last couple of months they have bumped them down to $59 (which is a steal). Seems to be no pattern as to when they drop the price to 59, you just have to watch the Bargain Cave. You can get the Supreme "XT" for 119 in the Cave, it's a bit lighter, but other than that I think it is internally similar to the regular Supreme. I've only had mine for a couple of months, so I can't say if they are durable over the long term. Compare reel weight of the Supremes to comparably sized reels in other brands, the Supremes compare well to more expensive reels. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Bargain-Cave/Fishing/Reels%7C/pc/105591780/c/105740280/sc/105742980/Pfluegerreg-Supreme-Spinning-Reel/1254593.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Freels%2F_%2FN-1102770%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_105742980%3FWTz_l%3Dundefined%253Bcat105591780%253Bcat105740280&WTz_l=undefined%3Bcat105591780%3Bcat105740280%3Bcat105742980
J-Doc Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 I have found that using cheaper reels in the Shimano line work just as well as the more expensive ones. For that matter, I'm quite content with much lesser expensive gear these days. Rods and reels. I've got expensive rods and reels and for the money, they don't offer a significant advantage. I bought a $30 Diawa graphite rod and a $20 Quantum reel for spoons and I'll be darn if it's not perfect for it. Sensitive and strong backbone. Using the right line helps too. Just my 2 cents. When you're wife is super budget conscious it's hard to buy hi quality because the tongue lashing isn't worth it. So I get by just fine. :-) Chief Grey Bear and Daryk Campbell Sr 2 Need marine repair? Send our own forum friend "fishinwrench" a message. He will treat you like family!!! Guest Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 The pflueger is another reason why I'm reel shopping. I hooked a good un at hot lake & the drag locked up. I freaked out for a second, until I got it in the boat.
Guest Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 J Doc, those cheap spinning reels work fine for a little while, but the bearings & drag can't stand up to the abuse. I don't mind spending $99 on a good reel with a quality drag. I'm only buying 1 or 2 combos per year. But I do use the cheaper stuff when fishing from a canoe.
dtrs5kprs Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Nice fish. Was about to send you a pm and ask if you had been out. I like any of the Daiwas in the 3000 size (except maybe the new Excelers- they tinkered with the sizing). Any of them that list a capacity of 8/240. We have them from the $20 Crossfire up to the $90 range on the old Excelers and they just run like champs. Have tortured some of my old ones, 2006 or so, and they still work.
Guest Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 These are all great suggestions & I appreciate y'all's input. I guess I could be like Ned & cut the bail off & learn to back reel. Lol
Smallieguy87 Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 The Diawa Lexa 2500 would be a great choice. I have 2 of them and use them for all sorts of fishing be it dragging tubes, light jigs, or any other plastic body of a jig head. They can be had new around the $99 mark on ebay.
