moguy1973 Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 I'm a believer now. Caught fish in cold ponds this past week when nothing else would. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
dtrs5kprs Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 well said. I was taught the the slow and steady method by my great uncle. When i was young id be plugging away and he would be sitting there slowly working this old 6 inch curl tail worm he swore by which was electric blue with a fire tail by the way. Sometimes i swear i would cast out and reel in 10-15 times before he would throw back out. That being said he always caught more fish then me when we fished together. I now use that very same frame of mind. I feel like i could fish just about any soft plastic effectively on a jig head of some sort and slice cover up into angles. I don't have any issues fishing easy though! i love to swim a 4-5' grub which to me is as simple as it gets and it always seems to work! I have no doubt the Ned is a great rig and i do look forward to fishing it. I guess when it comes to a technique so easy yet so deadly its a tough decision to use anything else. I wonder if my medium power rods with #8 fluoro would kill the action to much? I have always thrown it in 6# Seaguar. When I've had folks in the boat running it on 8# they have caught significantly fewer fish. A medium rod will work, as long as it is not on the heavy side of medium. There is a ton of variation between ML and M sticks, and a lot of variables. Some ML are probably too soft, some M far too stiff.
Fish24/7 Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 3.5" SK coffee tubes & bitsy tubes, although Ive gotten away from the tube in recent years. Awesome bait I'm a coffee/bitsy tube fan also. I even make weedless heads designed especially for the bitsy tube and tiny paca craws which is another fav. of mine! i'll post a pic when I get a chance. Smallieguy87 1

Fish24/7 Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 approx. 1/8 oz. made with non toxic wire, Eagle Claws works great for small tube style baits of this size (tiny paca craw shown)
Smallieguy87 Posted March 19, 2015 Author Posted March 19, 2015 Those look like they would work great with the bitsy tubes. I've been wanting to buy some of the 2.75 inch tubes but have had a tough time finding a jig i thought would fit them well.
joeD Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 One cannot catch smallmouth bass in a swimming pool. Therefore, one cannot draw any conclusions about the effectiveness of a lure based on how it looks in a swimming pool. Tube jigs are effective in certain situations on Ozark streams. Lakes or ponds, I don't know. There is no brand or color or design that is more effective than any other when it comes to tube jigs. If you like it, throw it. Ned rigs will reduce your chances of catching a big smallie. I respect do it yourselfers and your molds and colors and desire to do it your way. But, really, how many iterations of a crawdad can there be? Which, as usual, begs the question: What is more important to you, the process or the result?

Hate to say it, but the effectiveness of the Ned Rig is pretty much written in stone at this point. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xc-vHuo3QA4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRittZrKpkA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTZHOkEFUXA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTZHOkEFUXA The pool vids were just to give an idea of why the Elaztech plastics work better than regular plastics, but to be honest I would not be surprised to catch a brown fish out of a bath tub using the Ned. As for size...any bait that will catch brown fish 18" and up has the potential to catch a truly big fish. Like an old 1/8oz hair jig and U2 tail, size matters not.

I tend to do well with tube jigs in the ozark streams that i fish. They are used to frequently in the great lakes as well as other large smallmouth lakes up north and tend to work very well. As for ponds i don't really know. I have used many brands of tubes and i haven't seemed to find one i don't like. The topic wasn't really to see what color is the most effective it was simply to reach out to other anglers and see what they like to use or what colors they have the most confidence in. As for the Ned rig i cant comment on if it reduces chances of catching a big smallmout as i haven't fished it but i like to learn about a new technique.
joeD Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 Jesus smallie guy, who cares what other people have confidence in. Plus, the Great Lakes is not the ozarks. I can tell you how to catch many and big fish on our streams, but you wouldn't believe me. Smallieguy87 1
