fishinwrench Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 I'm not sure what the amperage draw of the newest sonar units is, but keeping your cranking battery at its peak condition is a really big deal when running ECU controlled outboards. If you are running 2 sonars, a livewell pump, ect. at all times then you truly need every bit of that outboards charging system devoted to the cranking battery. Especially since you (hopefully)are spending more time fishing than you are running down the lake @ 3500+ RPM's.
Smalls21 Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 and it doesn't hurt to upgrade the cranking battery if you are using big screen tv's
5bites Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 I actually considered throwing in a fourth battery to be dedicated to running accessories. It's probably a good idea but I hat the added weight and expense.
Members Rob Shaw Posted March 19, 2015 Members Posted March 19, 2015 My Allison BasSport Pro came with a Stealth I charger. It lasted over 7 years. I just removed it from the boat last week to send back to Stealth for refurbishing. Not real sure why it quit charging but they will make it right and I'll reinstall it when it returns. Seth 1
DChance Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 DC chargers are not new. Stealth has one others include minnkota Stay N Church (which can also charge trolling batteries from the tow vehicle while driving home) and tjere are several others. I have had a stay n charge for about 6 years or so. They are awesome. Yes they do charge trolling batteries after the cranking is charged. No they dont void warranty. You can get a stealth or other DC charger as an option on most new boats.

DChance Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 Whatever "lesson" you refer to might benefit others if you would elaborate. Read the original post and it sounded like he thought the stealth style charger was the same as tje plug in AC. Chargers. I am no marine mechanic or electrician but was simply trying to inform that the on the run style chargers are not the same as your typical charger. Wrench since you are a mechanic why not advise the OP to help him? I am sure you know more than me about how the stealth works differently than AC chargers. Give a reccomendation. I was simply tryi g to help. And by all means if I am wrong than tell me. I would like to know myself.
fishinwrench Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 I know nothing about Stealth chargers, I just know a lot about outboard charging systems. If you truly need the outboard to assist charging your TM batteries throughout the day....then IMO you need better batteries, not a better charger. Trolling motors these days are very efficient consumers of battery life and your batteries should not be going dead even on a long day in the wind. Besides, does anyone realize how long/far you would have to run in order to make a noticeable difference in battery charge rate?
5bites Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 Whatever "lesson" you refer to might benefit others if you would elaborate. I was referring to the Stay N Church misspelling. While I completely agree I just thought it was humorous especially me being a iPhone user and fight auto correct. Daryk Campbell Sr 1
